Retired Captain Harold Barber calls it the battle that saved the Marine Corps. Yet the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/korean-war-death-of-task-force-drysdale.htm\">Battle of Chosin Reservoir<\/a>, and the Korean War as a whole, is largely America\u2019s \u201cforgotten war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking with HistoryNet, Barber, one of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/frozen-chosen.htm\">Chosin Few<\/a>,\u201d acknowledges that Korea is the \u201cquiet one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe people that were in the Chosin really never talked about it like World War II, or World War I, or Vietnam,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday in California, at the Twentynine Palms Cemetery, Barber hoped to rectify that in his own way \u2014 70 years after the battle\u2019s end\u00ad. Accompanied by the 7th Marine Regiment Color Guard and its chaplain, Barber laid markers on the gravestones of Chosin Reservoir veterans \u00ad William John Flynn Jr. and William Richard Klink to honor their service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI went to the cemetery and I looked and there is no marker on there saying that they served up in the Chosin Reservoir,\u201d Barber told HistoryNet. \u201cSo I contacted the headquarters for the Korean War Marines and I got markers to put on their gravestones to show that they served up\u201d there.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/12\/03\/how-the-navy-helped-save-frozen-chosins-marines\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chosin-MAIN.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How the Navy helped save Frozen Chosin\u2019s Marines<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The brave Marines on the ground deserved brave Navy pilots in the sky.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite knowing both Marines after the war, it wasn\u2019t until years later that Barber discovered that all three had served at Chosin. Barber and Klink worked closely together for eight years, but talked \u201cabout everything except the Marine Corps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klink, a Marine engineer, was shot through the shoulder during the bitter fighting at Chosin and was medically discharged in 1951. A fact, Barber says, he only learned from Klink\u2019s son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in the mountains of North Korea, the Battle of Chosin was \u201cnever intended for military operations,\u201d Oliver P. Smith, the commanding general of 1st Marine Division, later acknowledged. The incredibly treacherous and snow slicked terrain, along a single winding road, made it a perfect ambush spot for the Chinese forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the 1st Marine Division, the largest American unit engaged at Chosin, beat back wave after wave of Chinese, Smith famously quipped, \u201cRetreat, hell! We\u2019re not retreating, we\u2019re just advancing in&nbsp;a different direction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pitting 30,000 U.S., Republic of Korea, and British troops against 120,000 Chinese soldiers, the U.N. forces were outnumbered and at risk of annihilation. Over the next 18 days the men fought a vicious battle, desperately \u201cadvancing in a different direction\u201d to escape the Chinese trap and reach Hungnam, a North Korean port some 70 miles away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barber, at the time a PFC in the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines, recalls the misery of having to wear the same thin uniform meant for the summer heat of Pusan, South Korea. In the mountains of North Korea, however, that uniform meant that if you stopped, you froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the end of the campaign on December 13th, nearly 6,000 Americans were dead or missing, with thousands more wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Barber, a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam, it is the memory of Chosin that remains.
