{"id":22607,"date":"2021-06-10T15:59:45","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T15:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/06\/10\/a-parent-of-a-service-member-killed-in-sinking-aav-should-be-included-on-the-marine-corps-amphibious-capability-commission\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:51:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:51:52","slug":"a-parent-of-a-service-member-killed-in-sinking-aav-should-be-included-on-the-marine-corps-amphibious-capability-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/opinion\/2021\/06\/10\/a-parent-of-a-service-member-killed-in-sinking-aav-should-be-included-on-the-marine-corps-amphibious-capability-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps amphibious council should include a parent of service member killed in AAV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the Marine Corps is setting up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/06\/02\/marine-corps-needs-to-restore-amphibious-capabilities-commandant-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cblue-ribbon\u201d commission<\/a> to look into the Corps\u2019 waterborne, or amphibious, capabilities and need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He should, given the appalling fiasco on July 30, 2020, when nine young men \u2015 some in their teens \u2015 died a horrific drowning death in the water off Camp Pendleton, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Commandant Gen. David Berger now says he will \u201clikely\u201d include \u201ca civilian with non-military safety experience\u201d in his commission. It\u2019s about time there was a non-Marine, non-Navy person in another inquiry. The services should not be \u201cjudges in their own case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, better still, Berger needs to include in his commission a parent of one of the nine young people who died needlessly. Those parents suffered the greatest loss of all and their interests should be a top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nominating a parent representative would show respect and recognition of their awful loss. And, there are some fine candidates among those parents, including a father with federal and state government safety, law enforcement and intelligence experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/disaster\/2021\/05\/03\/why-arent-military-generals-being-held-accountable-for-preventable-training-deaths\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6324213.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why aren\u2019t military generals being held accountable for preventable training deaths?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Instead, lower ranks are often penalized in a shameful pass-the-blame game, this op-ed author says.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress and the public, and above all the grieving parents of those young service members, are getting tired of the Marine Corps \u2015 and all the other military services \u2015 investigating themselves, and declaring year after year, following training deaths, \u201cWe\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet they haven\u2019t \u201cgot this\u201d \u2015 whether it be eliminating or severely reducing preventable accidents, or allowing commanders\u2019 discretion to kill or minimize cases involving rape or sexual assaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s time to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/opinion\/2021\/05\/03\/why-arent-military-generals-being-held-accountable-for-preventable-training-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\"> bring generals and admirals <\/a>in particular to account, force them to shoulder responsibility and stop passing the blame down the ranks to unit commanders and lower, all the way to junior officers and enlisted. Enough of the buck passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a culture of poor leadership not just in the Marine Corps, but the Navy, Army and Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flag and star officers are paid highly, with major perks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many retire and join what President Dwight D. Eisenhower correctly warned of ,\u201cthe military-industrial complex,\u201d earning handsome directorships at defense companies or well-remunerated consultancies selling hardware or \u201cadvice\u201d to the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s remember that these generals and admirals have included in their job descriptions keywords like<i> <\/i>readiness, preparedness and safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With rank, one would have thought, comes responsibility and accountability. Instead, there is a culture of avoidance, but punishment for subordinates instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These high-ranking officers are public servants, paid by the taxpayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This focus on the 2020 AAV sinking never would have come about without the advocacy of those nine families, serious media probing of the amphibious assault vehicle tragedy, a Government Accountability Office deep-dive inquiry into fatal military training rollovers, and strong oversight now by Congressional subcommittee chairs Rep. Jackie Speier, D-California, and Rep. John Garamendi. D-California. It largely would have been business as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/marine-corps-times\/2021\/06\/09\/marine-corps-inspector-general-fired-counseled-as-result-of-deadly-aav-accident\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. Gen. Robert Castellvi<\/a>, commander of the 1st Marine Division at the time of the accident, has been given a \u201ccounseling\u201d and a written reprimand in his record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No loss of a star, to be clear. But he at least will not be returning to his post of inspector general of the Marine Corps or advance to another star. He probably will retire. He should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So over to you, Gen. Berger: Why did you choose a pretty minimal penalty for Castellvi? How inclusive will you be in your commission membership? Can you include another civilian in your commission?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would not only be smart optics. It would be justice, and then some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Michael H. C.
