State Department officials are asking, but China\u2019s not happy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a State Department request is granted, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/06\/26\/as-the-corps-moves-to-the-acv-taiwan-wants-more-aavs\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Marines <\/a>could be guarding diplomats in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/pentagon\/2017\/03\/30\/china-says-weapons-won-t-stop-unification-with-taiwan\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Taiwan <\/a>for the first time in four decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent reporting by <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/29\/politics\/state-taiwan-marines-request\/index.html\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">CNN <\/a>found that several weeks ago State Department officials made the request for a Marine Security Guard detachment. As of reporting this past weekend, the request had not been granted and the department\u2019s spokesperson declined to comment, citing a policy of not discussing \u201cspecific security matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An unnamed U.S. military official told the news outlet that the number of Marines would likely be about 10 and they would help safeguard a new facility at the American Institute and its staff of 450 in the capital of Taipei.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/11\/the-real-russia-threat-and-the-corps-pivotal-plan-for-a-european-fight\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MAR-EUROPE-Option-3-0618.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The real Russia threat \u2014 and the Corps\u2019 pivotal plan for a European fight<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Even though the Marine Corps\u2019 footprint in Europe is small, it may prove pivotal should a fight break out in the Baltics or the high north.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move could upset ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and China. At a Friday press conference Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters that part of the U.S. pledge to a \u2018one China\u2019 policy requires that it not have official exchanges or military contact with Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe US is clear about the Chinese position and knows it should exercise caution on this issue to avoid affecting overall bilateral ties,\u201d Lu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independently governed nation.
