Wentworth was on the last day of his 30-day assignment deployment <\/span>at Rickenbacker National Air Guard Base, just\u00a0south of here Columbus<\/span>. But 16 months later he was still there deployed<\/span>, transporting bodies of the fallen slain Marines home<\/span> and taking the wounded Marines <\/span>to hospitals and other facilities. Unofficially, he was providing emotional support to the families, as well as to wounded Marines who had returned home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the past decade, Wentworth \u2014\u00a0who Lima Company members only <\/span>known only as “Doc” to members of Lima Company\u00a0\u2014 listened, dried tears and “had to bend the rules sometimes to make sure my Marines were taken care of,” he said remembers<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Aug. 15-16\u00a0Last weekend, t<\/span>The unit\u2019s 10-year reunion, held Aug. 15-16, was the first time he\u2019d seen some of the men since their return from Iraq. After their October 2005 homecoming, Wentworth tried to keep in touch through email and social media, but eventually many of the connections drifted away. This reunion, in his opinion, was exactly what these veterans needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I’m a firm believer that the best medicine possible is Marines talking to each other,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 2005, about 30 percent of the unit was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress\u00a0disorder, Wentworth said. In monthly screenings, Wentworth sat down with each Marine in the unit when they\u00a0returned from their deployment came home, asking ed them questions and filling ed out forms used to determine whether their conditions could be identified as PTSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After the unit’s return, Wentworth sat down with\u00a0each Marine in the unit, asked\u00a0them questions and filled out forms used to determine whether their conditions could be identified as PTS. About\u00a030 percent of the unit received a PTS diagnosis, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the Lima Marines know that Wentworth did a lot more than just checking boxes on forms and going through the motions<\/span>. The night before the reunion\u00a0On Friday night<\/span>, one of the Marines spotted Wentworth from across the hotel lobby.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Holy sh–it<\/span>, Doc. I almost didn\u2019t recognize you,” he said, pointing at Wentworth\u2019s gray grey <\/span>hair. “I probably caused a lot of this.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n Seeking mental health care \u2014 even for a unit like Lima Company that suffered an exceptional number of casualties \u2014 was considered a stigma. Whenever Marines had to visit Wentworth or other medical practitioners, they therefore <\/span>simply referred to them as “wizards.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n While taking care of the families whose sons had died, Wentworth sacrificed as well. After he returned from his assignment at Rickenbacker\u00a0\u00a0deployment in Columbus<\/span>, he suffered from severe migraines and nightmares that were the onset of his own PTSD<\/span>. And ultimately, taking care of his Lima family resulted in him losing his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wentworth was familiar with these emotions from his 2003\u00a0deployment to Iraq in 2003<\/span>. He knew that the post-traumatic stress was going to hit him at some point. But his memories with Lima Company didn\u2019t compare to anything he\u2019d experienced before.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n “We had nine funerals in five days,” he said. “How could you possibly prepare yourself for something like this?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the reunion here weekend<\/span>, Marines and their families came up to Wentworth, gave him long hugs, maybe brief smiles. Few words were spoken between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “We don’t need to talk,” Wentworth said. “We just react. After his PTSD<\/span> onset in 2006, he had to see counselors himself. He remembers how he turned to alcohol to block his memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “The only way to get through it was to stay extremely busy,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the past decade, Wentworth learned to accept that there is no escape from the past.
