David Berger said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/events\/hearings\/fiscal-year-2022-united-states-navy-and-marine-corps-budget\" target=_blank>congressional hearing<\/a> Thursday that the tests were the result of the \u201cbrilliance of a couple of young officers\u201d and industry partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines, Maj. Matthew Browning and John Pomfret, lead engineer at Marine Corps Systems Command, along with employees at <a href=\"https:\/\/oshkoshdefense.com\/vehicles\/jltv\/\" target=_blank>Oshkosh Defense<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raytheonmissilesanddefense.com\/news\/advisories\/raytheon-missiles-defense-marines-use-new-ground-based-anti-ship-system-strike\" target=_blank>Raytheon<\/a>, Kongsberg and Corvid took a modified, unmanned <a href=\"https:\/\/oshkoshdefense.com\/vehicles\/jltv\/\" target=_blank>j<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/oshkoshdefense.com\/vehicles\/jltv\/\" target=_blank>oint light tactical vehicle<\/a>, removed the cab and installed a Naval Strike Missile, ground launcher and fire control system on the back. Marine Maj. Aaron Davidson is the current project officer for the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/10\/25\/marines-launch-rocket-from-amphibious-ship-to-destroy-target-on-land\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HIMARS-on-ship.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines launch rocket from amphibious ship to destroy land target 70 km away<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">During a recent test, a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System aboard the amphibious transport dock Anchorage successfully destroyed a target on land 70 kilometers away, according to the Defense Department.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unmanned version is known as the remotely operated ground unit for expeditionary fires vehicle, or ROGUE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Strike Missile already is aboard ships and the JLTV is fielded, the Marines simply combined two existing platforms to get after a problem, Berger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the speed at which we have to move,\u201d he said. \u201cOur job is to support the fleet commander, the fleet\u2019s job is to support the joint force commander and this is one way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination is known as the Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, or NMESIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/04\/29\/marines-fire-anti-ship-missile-back-of-unmanned-truck-hit-target-sea.html\" target=_blank>Military.com<\/a> first reported the missile test and Berger\u2019s comments on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That test was performed recently on Point Mugu Sea Range, California, according to a Raytheon Missile and Defense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raytheonmissilesanddefense.com\/news\/advisories\/raytheon-missiles-defense-marines-use-new-ground-based-anti-ship-system-strike\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur Naval Strike Missile is a vital weapon for denying enemies the use of key maritime terrain,\u201d said Kim Ernzen, vice president of Naval Power at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raytheonmissilesanddefense.com\/news\/advisories\/raytheon-missiles-defense-marines-use-new-ground-based-anti-ship-system-strike\" target=_blank>Raytheon<\/a>. \u201cThis test further demonstrates our partnership for advancing the Marine Corps\u2019 modernization priorities of enabling sea control and denial operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berger told representatives at the hearing that this kind of capability helps Marines support Navy operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow we can move this around on vessels, put it ashore and hold an adversary\u2019s navy at risk in order to ensure that the lines on the sea are kept open,\u201d Berger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a system, shooting at ships from both sea and ashore, is critical for the Marine Corps\u2019 massive force redesign. Nearly halfway through his tenure as the top Marine, Berger has pinned the Corps\u2019 future on a smaller, more dispersed force nimble enough to deploy unseen and take out big naval targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Gen. Eric Smith, deputy commandant for Combat Development and Integration, has trumpeted the necessity of Marines with such systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, Smith spoke at the Armoured Vehicles Conference about work Marines were already doing with the JLTV and other targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe experimentation that we\u2019ve done now to date successfully using lightweight mounted fires \u2015 think the back of a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle \u2015 is killing armor at ranges, rough calculation, about 15, 20 times the range that a main battle tank can kill another main battle tank,\u201d he said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2021\/02\/10\/early-experiments-are-proving-out-tank-free-marine-corps-concept\" target=_blank>U.S. Naval Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact range wasn\u2019t included in the press release, but company data shows that the Naval Strike Missile can hit targets a 100 nautical miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking unorthodox measures to combine Marine weapons with or against ships is an approach the Corps has been taking for a while now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps Times reported in 2017 that Marines took a High Mobility Rocket System aboard the amphibious transport dock Anchorage and fired missiles to destroy a target on land 70 km away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That effort was part of early work linking HIMARS and the F-35B to find and strike targets from multiple platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with sensing, Marines and sailors have taken some novel approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2019, the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship Kearsarge with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit was transiting the Suez Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drone and missile threats were, and still are, a threat in U.S. Central Command, especially at those key choke points such as the canal or the Strait of Hormuz entering the Persian Gulf and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, Marines parked their counter-drone system, Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System, or LMADIS, on the ship\u2019s deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LMADIS uses two Polaris MRZR all-terrain vehicles.
