Gen. Jon Davis told wing commanders on Wednesday that non-deployed\u00a0squadrons must take &#8220;an operational pause&#8221;\u00a0within the next seven business days, said Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Sarah Burns. The move is different than grounding aircraft, she said.<br\/><br\/>Commanders can decide which day to take the pause, during which aircraft are typically inspected, Burns said<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> on Wednesday<\/span>\u200b.<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burns<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bcould not say what specifically<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">exactly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bprompted Davis&#8217; decision, which was approved by Marine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Corps<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bCommandant Gen. Robert Neller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three Marine Corps F\/A-18s have crashed in the last two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">when Blue Angels pilot<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bMarine Capt. Jeff Kuss, a Blue Angels pilot, was killed on June 2 when his\u00a0Hornet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/06\/02\/navy-blue-angel-jet-crashes-tennessee\/85310876\/\">crashed shortly after takeoff<\/a>in Smyrna, Tennessee. On July 28, Marine Maj. Richard Norton, a graduate of the Navy&#8217;s TOPGUN school, was killed when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/07\/30\/hornet-marine-crash\/87795184\/\">his F\/A-18C crashed<\/a>near Marine Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then on Tuesday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/story\/military\/2016\/08\/02\/hornet-crashes-during-training-flight-nevada\/87965692\/\">a Navy pilot safely ejected<\/a>from an F\/A-18C that was on loan from the Marine Corps. The Hornet went down near\u00a0Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps\u00a0aviation is suffering from a perfect storm that has caused the number of flyable aircraft to plunge in the last five years. Adwin Esters\/Marine Corps<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also\u00a0in the process of transitioning to the F-35<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bjoint<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bstrike f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">F<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bighter, but delays in the program have forced the service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bto fly its<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">their<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bHornets, AV-8B Harrier II jump jets and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">their<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bEA-6B Prowlers longer than anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, only 378 of the Marine Corps\u2019 required flightline inventory of 1,065 fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft could fly, Davis said at an Aug. 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">event at a<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bthink tank event in Washington<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">, D.C<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b. Since then, roughly 80 more aircraft have become flightworthy, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With fewer aircraft flying, Marine pilots are not getting the flight hours they need, but the service is slowly improving, Davis said. The Marine Corps is trying to get pilots the appropriate number of flight hours by 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Aug. 1 event, Davis was asked if Marine pilots\u2019 lives were in danger as a result of the drop in flight hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I do not think we\u2019re unsafe, but we\u2019re not as proficient as we should be,&#8221; he<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bsaid. &#8220;We don\u2019t let units fly that are unsafe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200badded that he tracks all Marine squadrons&#8217; weekly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the how many<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bflight hours<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">all units get per week<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200b, noting that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bNorton\u2019s unit,\u00a0Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232,\u00a0was &#8220;doing OK.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Jan. 14, two CH-53E helicopters from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 crashed off Hawaii, killing 12 Marines.\u00a0Davis has said the CH-53E helicopter crews had enough training for the mission they were doing, but they probably needed more training before they could fly in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We don\u2019t know what happened out there \u2014 I won\u2019t know until that investigation that comes out,&#8221; he told reporters on July 6. &#8220;I grieve for every one of the families. That\u2019s the hardest part for me. I\u2019m the deputy commandant for aviation and I lost 12 great Marines. That\u2019s what I think about every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About four months before that crash, another CH-53E Super Stallion made a hard landing in North Carolina. One Marine was killed and 11 others injured.\u00a0In May 2015, an MV-22B Osprey crashed in Hawaii, leaving two Marines dead and 20 more injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine\u00a0aviation deaths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/story\/military\/2015\/09\/06\/marine-aviation-deaths-hit-5-year-high\/71665398\/\">hit a five-year high<\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">in
