{"id":23523,"date":"2019-03-22T20:44:30","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T20:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/22\/marines-to-continue-upgrading-the-m1a1-abrams-but-still-lagging-behind-army-armor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:52:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:52:28","slug":"marines-to-continue-upgrading-the-m1a1-abrams-but-still-lagging-behind-army-armor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/03\/22\/marines-to-continue-upgrading-the-m1a1-abrams-but-still-lagging-behind-army-armor\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines to continue upgrading the M1A1 Abrams, but still lagging behind Army armor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Corps buys modification kits for its Abrams tanks, the Army has had a new version for two years and eyes another upgrade by 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps will continue to upgrade its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/15\/these-upgrades-will-help-marines-destroy-more-tanks-and-better-protect-their-own\/\" target=_blank> Abrams tanks<\/a> and is pushing ahead on a bridging system to replace the legacy M60 tank, a Vietnam-era tank used to unfold bridges that can support the Abrams as it crosses gaps in the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently released budget request documents show that the Corps is asking for about the same amount of money to continue the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/11\/26\/new-army-tests-put-a-tank-crew-in-charge-of-a-mini-formation-of-unmanned-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Abrams upgrades<\/a> in 2020 but will double then nearly triple that amount to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/29\/the-marine-corps-want-three-types-of-amphib-vehicles-including-one-with-a-30mm-cannon\/\" target=\"_blank\">keep upgrading the Abrams<\/a> through 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M1A1 Abrams upgrade program includes modifications kits and money for support vehicles and devices. Those include the Assault Bridging Modernization Program that replaces the M60 and launching system of the Armored Vehicle Launching Bridge, used extensively in the 2003 Iraq invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kit also improves the Improved Recovery Vehicle, or the M88A2 Hercules, that can haul tanks off the battlefield for maintenance or recover them from ditches, canals or other hazards it might encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/10\/25\/army-receives-upgraded-abrams-tank-and-more-improvements-are-on-the-way\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/M1A2-SEPv3Abrams.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army receives upgraded Abrams tank \u2014 and more improvements are on the way<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Earlier this month, the first of six M1A2 System Enhancement Package Version 3 Abrams tanks rolled off initial production at the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018 and 2019 the Corps sought nearly $23 million for the packages, which will increase steadily to $37.6 million in 2021 and upward until at least 2024 when $57.7 million is projected for the kits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the specific enhancements to the Abrams itself include a gunner\u2019s primary sight lower panel. Abrey Liggins\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tactical communications upgrade aims to replace the legacy AN\/PRC 119 radios currently on the tank. And some basic items such as cabling, mounts and installation hardware is needed to install the Abrams Integrated Display and Targeting System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Marines still use the M1A1 version of the Abrams tank the Army began fielding version 3 upgrade of the M1A2 version 3 in 2017, also known as the M1A2C, and an improved M1A2D is under development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M1A2C enhancements address on-board power, electronics, computing, weapons, force protection and sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those advances include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joint Tactical Radio System: The new system integrates various radio types into the system and allows for network readiness and interoperability with the rest of the brigade combat team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Power Generation and Distribution: This enhancement includes improved amperage alternator, Slip Ring, Enhanced Hull Power Distribution Unit\/Common Remote Switching Modules, and the Battery Monitoring System. These changes compensate for increased power demands of newer tank equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><b>Line Replaceable Unit\/Line Replaceable Module redesign:<\/b> New modules allow for troubleshooting within the system to the card level without the need to remove the entire system to conduct repairs.<\/li><li><b>Counter Remote Control IED Electronic Warfare version 3: <\/b>This is the latest version of the tank\u2019s counter-IED equipment.<\/li><li><b>Ammunition Data Link:<\/b> The ADL allows tankers to program the M829A4 Advanced Kinetic Energy and Advanced Multi-Purpose rounds.<\/li><li><b>Auxiliary Power Unit:<\/b> Allows tankers to operate the on-board system during silent watch operations for reduced detection probability.<\/li><li><b>Armor Upgrades: <\/b>Undisclosed advances in ballistic protection.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are primarily a bridge to the version four variant planned for the 2020s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M1A2D\u2019s \u201ccornerstone\u201d tech is 3rd Generation Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) sight on both weapons sights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That upgrade will \u201cintegrate a color camera, Eye-safe Laser Range Finder and a cross-platform laser pointer to facilitate multidomain battle in to the commander\u2019s sight,\u201d according to Army officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M1A2D is slated for testing in 2021, production in 2023 and fielding by 2025, according to
