{"id":23604,"date":"2018-02-08T17:15:19","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T17:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/08\/marines-boost-amphibious-power-with-foldable-mine-plow\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:30:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:30:10","slug":"marines-boost-amphibious-power-with-foldable-mine-plow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/02\/08\/marines-boost-amphibious-power-with-foldable-mine-plow\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines boost amphibious power with foldable mine plow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another move back to the sea and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/01\/09\/set-up-to-fail-marines-dont-have-enough-ships-to-train-for-a-real-amphibious-assault\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">amphibious roots<\/a>, the Marine Corps recently tested a prototype mine plow that can fold up to fit on landing craft in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/09\/20\/commandant-amphibious-vehicles-will-be-vital-in-future-shore-combat\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">amphibious assault.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps Assault Breacher Vehicle conducted its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/11\/20\/the-corps-needs-an-anti-ship-coastal-defense-missile-system\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">amphibious landings<\/a> with the new modified mine plow in December, according to a Marine Corps Systems Command release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current full-width mine plow fitted to the breacher vehicle does not fit on the Navy Landing Craft Utility boat Marines use to move gear ashore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the new prototype has hinges and folds up to fit onto the craft, making it truly amphibious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert B. Neller has spent much of his tenure pushing the Marines back to the sea after 17 years of counterinsurgency land warfare. (Marines)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines\u2019 equipment must fit aboard those ships for landings to be practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the breacher vehicle may not jump to the top of the list of combat vehicles, clearing minefields can only be done effectively by the equipment it carries, experts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Assault Breacher Vehicle is the premiere breaching tool in the Marine Corps, and there is no other tool like it,\u201d said Alvin \u201cTommy\u201d West, ABV platform engineer, in the command release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines detonate line charges to destroy or render useless the mines in their pathway.
