Shane &#8220;Rhino&#8221; Tomko left the brig on Saturday<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0June 25<\/span>, said Marine Corps spokesman Rex Runyon. He <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">had been <\/span>was sentenced to 60 days&#8217; confinement at his\u00a0May 27 court-martial, but military judge Col. Pete Rubin said Tomko would receive credit for the three weeks he <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">had <\/span>already spent in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomko was released after 50 days because he received five days off his sentence for good behavior for each month he spent in the confinement, Runyon said. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will consider Tomko&#8217;s request to retire. Tomko is currently not on terminal leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The female Marine was not alleged to have engaged in any misconduct as it might relate to the charges for which Col Tomko was convicted,&#8221; Runyon said in an email. \u00a0&#8220;She was not charged; therefore, she was not punished in any way.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his court-martial,\u00a0Tomko admitted to Rubin that he <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">had <\/span>exchanged inappropriate\u00a0Facebook messages with the\u00a0female corporal under his command between <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">from <\/span>May 2014 and <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to <\/span>August 2015. Some of the exchanges contained sexual content.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomko also pleaded\u00a0guilty to having a subordinate obtain testosterone for him,\u00a0violating a military protective order not to contact his wife, and showing up <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">d\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0his May 6 arraignment with a blood alcohol more than three times the Virginia state limit of 0.08.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosecutors noted that at the time of his arraignment, Tomko was living behind the enlisted barracks at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. He<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> and he<\/span> drove to the courtroom while drunk\u00a0as Marines were getting in their physical training<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> PT<\/span> and heading <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ed <\/span>to chow.\u00a0As punishment, Tomko was sent to the\u00a0Rappahannock Regional Jail in Stafford, Virginia, on May 6. He was later transferred to\u00a0the U.S. Navy brig in\u00a0Chesapeake, Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February 2015, Tomko&#8217;s exemplary military career came crashing down after a command investigation into <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">his relationship <\/span>inappropriate behavior\u00a0with the female Marine led to his removal as commander of the\u00a0Wounded Warrior Regiment.\u00a0He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1983, later earning his commission and becoming an infantry and special operations officer. Prior to taking the reins at the Wounded Warrior Regiment, he served as\u00a0the\u00a0operations officer of the North Carolina-based 2nd Marine Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His military attorney, Maj. Geoff\u00a0Shows, argued at his May 27 court-martial that Tomko suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">had <\/span>turned him into &#8220;a Marine officer who is so broken that he can\u2019t get out of his own way.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shows argued that Tomko drank after being told not to because he was distressed about being prohibited from seeing his wife.\u00a0Tomko was also struggling with his\u00a0recent diagnosis of\u00a0having low testosterone levels, which the colonel was struggling to accept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomko had difficulty holding himself together during his court-martial. His arms often shook uncontrollably during the proceedings, and he delivered an emotional and semi-coherent statement in\u00a0court explaining\u00a0how he had fallen apart after several combat deployments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You can&#8217;t unsee what I&#8217;ve seen,&#8221; Tomko said. &#8220;How do you tell your wife, &#8216;Honey, I killed a bunch of people today?'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also recalled hearing a woman scream when he arrived at her home to inform her that her son had died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Your body breaks down,&#8221; he\u00a0said. &#8220;You just hurt.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In February 2015, Tomko&#8217;s
