Calling all scouts.\u00a0No, I don’t mean scout snipers. I’m talking about the Boy Scouts of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marines might\u00a0Were you a scout? Even if you weren’t, you may <\/span>be surprised to find out how much they have in common with scouts.\u00a0just how alike a scout and a Marine are. <\/span>In fact, the founder of scouting, Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, (B-P for short) was a lieutenant general in the British army back in the late 1800s. His book, “Aids to Scouting for NCOs and Men,” prompted many\u00a0was what sparked interest in <\/span>young men to learn about\u00a0the skills needed to be a scout in the army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vision statement of the Boy Scouts of America calls for \u00a0“The BSA is the nation’s foremost youth program of <\/span>character development and values-based leadership training. The program offers\u00a0In the future scouting will continue to offer <\/span>young people fun and : responsible fun and <\/span>adventure, and instills in them; instill in young people<\/span> lifelong\u00a0values and develop them in <\/span>ethical character traits. Scouts are trained\u00a0as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law; train young people <\/span>in citizenship, service and leadership,\u00a0and they serve America’s communities. and families with its quality, values-based programs.” <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know that’s a lot to digest, but let me break it down, Barney-style. “Responsible fun and adventure” sounds like your typical weekend safety brief, right? Instilling lifetime values from the Scout Law: “A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean\u00a0and reverent” can easily translate to honor, courage, and commitment. Training in service and leadership? Take a look at your promotion warrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still not Not <\/span>convinced yet<\/span>? Much like smartphones have applications\u00a0where there’s an app <\/span>for everything, Boy Scouts have a <\/span>merit badges for everything. There’s always an opportunity to be a merit badge counselor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you in motor-transport? You could teach automotive maintenance or truck transportation. Are you a pilot? Try aviation. Are you a data\/communications maintenance\u00a02800 <\/span>nerd like me? There are electricity, electronics, radio\u00a0and robotics merit badges. Maybe you’re in combat camera? You could teach videography\u00a0moviemaking<\/span> or photography. Are for infantrymen you 03’s <\/span>just really into marksmanship, there’s coaching on\u00a0ou can coach <\/span>rifle shooting, shotgun shooting, archery\u00a0and even pistol marksmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are just \u00a0That’s only <\/span>a few of the 117 merit badges a scout can currently earn. Even if you don’t have a military occupational specialty\u00a0MOS <\/span>that lines up with a merit badge, your hobbies probably\u00a0do. There are badges for\u00a0There’s <\/span>athletics, chess, climbing, farm mechanics, fishing, golf\u00a0and horsemanship,\u00a0just to name some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scouting program is professionally guided, but run by volunteers. That means that while there is just\u00a0By that, I mean that there’s <\/span>only a handful of people who get paid to coordinate all the logistics, . However, <\/span>there are enough volunteers across the U. S. to support more than 100,000 scout units. But that certainly doesn’t mean we couldn’t use more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the As I previously mentioned, there’s currently <\/span>117 merit badges that can be taught, there are\u00a0here’s <\/span>also seven ranks to earn, each of which with at least 10 ten <\/span>requirements. That adds up to 187 opportunities for Marines to impart some of their your <\/span>skills and knowledge. Personally, I don’t know every single thing that can be taught, so having that additional volunteer to fill in the gaps is immensely beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Marines wondering what’s in this for them, I’ve probably got you thinking by now “what’s in it for me?” First off, <\/span>volunteering is never a bad thing. Having some time documented looks good on counselings and fitness reports FitReps<\/span>, especially when backed up with letters of appreciation. It can even lead to personal awards. I recently was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for three years of continuous service to a local Boy Scout troop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s also Secondly, it’s <\/span>good for leadership development. Ever wonder what you can do differently to better lead your junior Marines? Try leading about 20 13-thirteen-<\/span>year-olds.\u00a0One method that I’ve learned is leadership through mentorship. Since I’m closer to the scouts’ age, they tend to take what I say to heart, rather than data dump whatever the other adults say<\/span>. I’ll be teaching them skills, and before I know it, they’re performing and teaching the younger scouts in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly, being in a Boy Scout troop is fun.\u00a0Most troops will go on a weekend outing at least once a month, play some form of team-building game before every meeting, and some even offer special leadership training for both youth and adults. If that’s not enough, you can usually get out of work early to attend meetings and camp\u00a0outs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I first joined the troop as an adult, I was hesitant to stick with it. I felt like an outsider because I didn’t grow up in that troop and didn’t have a son involved in the group. But those\u00a0That <\/span>feelings disappeared after just a few meetings. Just because you’re not a parent, doesn’t mean it’s weird to volunteer with the youth, and definitely doesn’t mean you can’t be a good mentor or volunteer<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts, I had made a promise to give back to the scouting program 10 ten <\/span>times what was invested in me. That promise is what has driven me to become more active in the community through scouting<\/span>. Even those who were never in the Boy Scouts should give volunteering with a troop a try.\u00a0ut you never being a Boy Scout shouldn’t keep you from wanting to volunteer with a troop. <\/span>If nothing else, it’s a good life experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marines interested in getting involved who\u00a0don’t know where to start can search for troops near their base<\/a>. Another good way to get involved is by talking with other Marines in your command.\u00a0Interested in joining, but don’t know where to start? Visit www.beascout.org and select the area of scouting you’re interested in (Cub Scouts, ages 7-10; Boy Scouts, ages 11-17; Venture Scouts, Varsity Scouts, or Sea Scouts, ages 17-20) and your ZIP code, and it’ll show you a map of all units in your area and their contact information. Don’t want to join and not know anybody? Talk to your command!\u00a0 <\/span>I happened to join a troop that my where my company’s <\/span>former company gunnery sergeant and first sergeant had kids involved in. My company executive officer’s son recently earned his\u00a0I’ve also met some people from another troop where my Company Executive Officer’s son recently earned his <\/span>Eagle Scout rank, so I now know\u00a0some people involved in that troop, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chances are that most Marines probably know\u00a0somebody with a son involved in the scouting program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
