{"id":23742,"date":"2015-03-11T15:56:32","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T15:56:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/03\/11\/corps-announces-deadline-to-name-unit-energy-managers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:51:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:51:14","slug":"corps-announces-deadline-to-name-unit-energy-managers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/03\/11\/corps-announces-deadline-to-name-unit-energy-managers\/","title":{"rendered":"Corps announces deadline to name unit energy managers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Leaders across the Corps have <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Battalions and squadrons across the Marine Corps have <\/span>45 days to select a Marine <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">per unit <\/span>to monitor their unit&#8217;s energy and water usage in buildings and barracks, according to a service-wide <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Marine <\/span>administrative message published Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unit energy manager program, detailed in the message, is a new vein in a larger effort to reduce Marine Corps facilities&#8217; energy consumption by 30 percent from 2003 baselines by the end of this year. Marine Corps Times first reported about <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">wrote about development of the program at <\/span>Marine Corps Installations Command&#8217;s plans to develop the program in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While corporals <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Marines at the E-4 level <\/span>and above are eligible for selection as unit energy managers, the MARADMIN<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">aradmin<\/span> indicates it is &#8220;strongly recommended&#8221; that unit commanders choose a staff noncommissioned officer or officer to lend the position sufficient authority to implement energy reduction requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsibilities <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Tasks <\/span>that will fall to the Marines chosen, according to the message, include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Receiving training and tools to effectively act as a unit&#8217;s energy point of contact.<\/li><li>Distributing energy usage information and best practices to the unit.<\/li><li>Acting as a liaison between unit leadership, installation energy managers<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span> and installation commands.<\/li><li>Working with installation energy managers to track program progress with qualitative and quantitative data.<\/li><li>Providing Marines with information and reminders to reduce individual energy, water and fuel consumption by turning off and unplugging lights and appliances when not in use, taking shorter showers, using energy-saving devices, carpooling and more.<\/li><li>Fielding reports of energy and water waste incidents from Marines in the unit.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200bThe energy managers will <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">UEMs would <\/span>receive training and tools from the installation energy managers \u2014 who themselves are full-time staff and typically civilians \u2014 but execute the duties of the position on top of their normal tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>While an effort to meet prescribed energy goals, including a planned <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ten <\/span>10 percent personal energy use reduction in the next five years, the program is designed to develop a better energy ethos and best practices within individual Marines, said Maj. Gen.
