{"id":23835,"date":"2015-09-14T21:39:48","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T21:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/09\/14\/shadow-down-marine-drone-lands-in-north-carolina-river\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:48:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:48:56","slug":"shadow-down-marine-drone-lands-in-north-carolina-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/09\/14\/shadow-down-marine-drone-lands-in-north-carolina-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Shadow down: Marine drone lands in North Carolina river"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Marine Corps\u00a0drone went down in a North Carolina river last week after the engine was cut and the unmanned aircraft parachuted into the water.\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The Marine Corps splashed one of its drones Thursday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">At approximately 9:28 a.m. on Sept. 10, an <\/span>The unarmed RQ-7B Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">(UAV) operated by the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing <\/span>made a forced landing in the Neuse River, just north of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point,\u00a0at about 9:28 a.m.on Sept. 10.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, North Carolina<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of Marine Unmanned Vehicle Squadron 2 <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">personnel <\/span>were conducting <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">local <\/span>familiarization training with the aircraft when they were forced to\u00a0&#8220;ditch&#8221; it in the water, said 1st<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> according to VMU-2 public affairs officer First<\/span> Lt. Maida Kalic, a spokeswoman for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ditching&#8221; is the technical term the service uses\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">employed by the Marine Corps <\/span>to describe &#8220;a planned event in which a flight crew knowingly makes a controlled emergency landing in water.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Every time an RQ-7B flies, part of the mission planning process is to designate a pre-planned safe landing or ditching area,&#8221; Kalic told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the event control of the drone is lost, it is programmed to automatically fly to the location,\u00a0cut the engine and parachute down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In this context, we do not know what the cause of the mishap was, however the proper procedures for &#8216;ditching&#8217;
