Eight others were still missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new document acquired by Marine Corps Times provides more insight into the final moments of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AAV was returning to the amphibious transport dock Somerset after conducting a training raid at San Clemente Island, California. The vehicle had 15 Marines and one sailor aboard at the time, according to the document and later confirmed by the Marine Corps. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/07\/31\/1-marine-dead-8-missing-from-aav-accident-off-southern-california-coast\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KAN-MAIN.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">1 Marine dead, 8 missing after AAV accident off Southern California coast<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">One Marine has died and eight troops are missing after an amphibious assault vehicle mishap in California.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after taking on water the vehicle \u201crapidly sank\u201d with all 16 service members still onboard, the document reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number aboard was not maximum capacity, but still a tight fit, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/10\/21\/marine-injured-in-aav-fire-gets-promoted-while-in-the-hospital\/\" target=_blank>Tagen Schmidt,<\/a> a veteran AAV crewman who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/09\/13\/15-marines-injured-after-amphibious-assault-vehicle-burst-into-flames\/\" target=_blank>survived a fiery AAV accident<\/a> in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith all the gear and personnel you would definitely be rubbing shoulders with the person next to you it would be a very tight fit,\u201d Schmidt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2014\/10\/11\/15-marines-1-sailor-injured-in-lejeune-aav-accident\/\" target=_blank>26 tons sinks really fast,<\/a>\u201d Jacob Aronen, who previously served as a corporal with the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, told Marine Corps Times Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aronen said the main way to escape a sinking AAV is through the top hatches, \u201cwhich often have handles that are so stiff you need to beat them with a hammer to open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added the weight of the hatches often requires two Marines to push open and would get even heavier as the vehicle goes underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Marines are unable to to get the hatches open before the vehicle sinks under more than three feet of water, opening them would become \u201cextremely difficult if not impossible,\u201d Schmidt said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aronen said, \u201cIf they got the top hatches open it\u2019s likely that most if not all of the Marines in the back would have been able to get out regardless of how fast it was sinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf not, it would be nearly impossible for a lot of them to escape,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the top hatches weren\u2019t open, the Marines would be forced to exit through either the rear hatch, where they would normally exit on the beach. Otherwise, they\u2019d be forced to fit through the tight exits provided by the troop commander and drivers hatches or the turret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll pretty tight squeezes especially in full gear,\u201d Aronen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schmidt was less optimistic about the ability for Marines to escape if they were unable to open the top hatches, saying the only option at that point was to \u201cpray you float back up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight of the military personnel aboard the AAV were able to escape the vehicle and were immediately taken to the Somerset, according to the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three of the Marines rescued were immediately rushed to a nearby San Diego hospital, where one Marine was pronounced dead, one Marine was listed as being in critical condition and another Marine was listed as stable, according to an earlier press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The search for the remaining eight troops is still underway, being conducted by several Navy ships, three Navy MH-60 helicopters alongside a U.S. Coast Guard cutter and a Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eight service members are still missing after Thursday&#8217;s AAV incident.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":50484,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-noindex":"","_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-nofollow":"","_yoast_wpseo_canonical":"","_acf":"","_yoast_wpseo_primary_category":69,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_smg_distribution_targets":{"2":{"categories":["news","disaster"],"primary_category":""}}},"categories":[101,22,12,25,69],"tags":[],"coauthors":[3097],"class_list":["post-23929","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news-roundup","category-disaster","category-news","category-newsletters","category-your-marine-corps"],"acf":{"subheadline":"","legacy_arc_id":"W5ZATXZ3VNDMJI7JXLPH5WTKSI","arc_canonical_url":"\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/07\/31\/what-we-know-about-thursdays-aav-accident\/","remove_feature_photo":false,"is_sponsored":false,"subtype":"","redirect_url":"","disable_inline_ads":false,"native_logo_pretext":"Presented By:"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.0 (Yoast SEO v28.1) -
