Michael J. Chesny, an explosive ordnance disposal Marine, and fellow Marine Staff Sgt. Joseph W. Manning were arrested and charged with trespassing after the two climbed a building in Graham, North Carolina, and hung a banner displaying a slogan that has been used by white supremacist groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was recently exposed that Chesny allegedly operated under the alias \u2018Tyrone\u2019 in an online chat forum where he posted more than a thousand messages, including one that <a href=\"https:\/\/discordleaks.unicornriot.ninja\/discord\/view\/218440#msg\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">questioned the legality of running over protesters blocking the roads<\/a>, just weeks before last year\u2019s deadly Charlottesville, Virginia, protest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/neo-nazi-tyrone-exposed-marine-180413104204554.html\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Al Jazeera<\/a> reported Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/10\/12\/marine-arrested-for-trespassing-after-unfurling-white-nationalist-banner-could-be-promoted\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Staff-sergeant-rank.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine arrested for trespassing after unfurling white nationalist banner could be promoted<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Sgt. Michael Chesny was selected to be promoted to staff sergeant after his May 20 arrest.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe guidance to Marines is clear: participation in supremacist or extremist organizations or activities is a violation of Department of Defense and Marine Corps orders and will lead to mandatory processing for separation following the first substantiated incident of misconduct which is what occurred with these former Marines,\u201d Nat Fahy, a spokesman with Marine Corps Installations East, told Marine Corps Times in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manning, a combat engineer and instructor at the Corps\u2019 engineer school aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was separated from the Corps in December, according to Marine officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"474\" height=\"465\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesny-mug-shot.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesny-mug-shot.jpg.jpg 474w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Chesny-mug-shot.jpg.jpg?resize=300,294 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sgt. (Alamance County Sheriff&#8217;s Office)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAssociation or participation with hate or extremist groups of any kind is directly contradictory to the core values of honor, courage, and commitment that we stand for as Marines and isn\u2019t tolerated by the Marine Corps,\u201d Fahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe acts of bigotry and racial extremism that were committed by these two individuals run contrary to our core values and are what ultimately led to their separation from the Marine Corps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Chesny and Manning had served on multiple deployments overseas, according to releasable information from their service record books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chesny had deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Afghanistan. During these deployments he served as an infantryman, not an EOD tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manning served three tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan where he earned three combat action ribbons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chesny had three good conduct medals and Manning had four. Good conduct medals are relatively common in the military, and are awarded to enlisted service members who perform three consecutive years without getting into trouble.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sgt.
