Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, wrote in a letter to the VA inspector general\u2019s office on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMembership in President Trump\u2019s private club should not give any individual the right to exert influence on decisions made by the VA that impact the over nine million veterans under its care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cshadow rulers\u201d controversy is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/02\/18\/who-is-in-charge-at-the-department-of-veterans-affairs\/\" target=_blank> yet another scandal for the embattled department<\/a>, which already this year has seen three different leaders, a Cabinet nominee forced to withdraw over allegations of workplace misconduct, and a public fight with its inspector general over access to whistleblower records.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/08\/08\/democrats-demand-white-house-reveal-details-of-outside-businessmens-influence-on-va-policy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_373872501526.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Democrats demand White House reveal details of outside businessmen\u2019s influence on VA policy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A ProPublica report Tuesday identified three associates of the president as major players in VA operations, even though they have no official government roles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At issue this time is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/ike-perlmutter-bruce-moskowitz-marc-sherman-shadow-rulers-of-the-va\" target=_blank>a report released by ProPublica this week<\/a> that identifies three businessmen \u2014 Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, primary care specialist Dr. Bruce Moskowitz and attorney Marc Sherman \u2014 as key architects of a host of veterans policy decisions by Trump\u2019s administration, even though none of the men hold an official government post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three are members of Trump\u2019s exclusive Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, and documents released by the news organization show frequent contact between the men and top VA officials, including discussions on policy matters and personal favors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Deputy White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said the three men \u201care not administration officials and have no direct influence over the Department of Veterans Affairs\u201d but added that Trump \u201cwelcomes the opinions of all Americans who share his vision of modernizing and reforming the VA to ensure our nation\u2019s heroes receive the care they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA spokesman Curt Cashour echoed those comments, adding that &#8220;almost everything in the story was before Secretary Wilkie came to VA. Secretary Wilkie has been clear how he does business \u2013 no one from outside the administration dictates VA policies or decisions \u2013 that\u2019s up to him and President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Warren and Schatz have requested the inspector general and Government Accountability Office launch a full investigation into the accusations, with an eye towards whether the behind-the-scenes work may be violating federal ethics laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their move is the latest in a series of outraged responses from Democrats on Capitol Hill to the revelations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Tim Walz, D-Minn., earlier this week demanded VA turn over thousands of documents related to the men\u2019s interactions with VA officials. On Thursday, Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Jon Tester, D-Mont., joined with 15 other chamber Democrats to request a full department review by Wilkie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou recall the commitment you made in your confirmation hearing to do what is best for veterans, even if it is in disagreement with others in the administration,\u201d their letter to Wilkie stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is clear now that direction is often coming to VA from voices who are outside the department, who may have financial interests in the contracting decisions being made \u2026 and who have not been entrusted to make decisions, through election to office or confirmation by the Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement Thursday the revelation is an insult to America\u2019s veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe poisonous Trump culture of corruption, cronyism and incompetence is finally coming to light at VA,\u201d she said. \u201cWhether or not the President likes it, the Department of Veterans Affairs is an indispensable and cherished guardian of our veterans\u2019 health care and benefits, not a second branch of Mar-a-Lago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican lawmakers have largely stayed quiet on this latest VA controversy. A spokeswoman for Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., said he is \u201caware of the individuals mentioned in the story and has concerns about the effect that outside individuals may have had on the VA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, a spokeswoman for House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Phil Roe, R-Tenn., said the report \u201creiterates yet another reason why the department needs permanent, strong leadership and the chairman is confident Secretary Wilkie will be just that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither Trump nor Wilkie, who was sworn in as the 10th VA secretary on July 30, have publicly commented yet on the allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House officials have repeatedly touted VA as one of their most successful policy efforts over the last 18 months, with numerous high-profile pieces of legislation and executive orders related to veterans health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the administration has also drawn criticism from outside advocates what they see as efforts to push the veterans health bureaucracy towards privatization, and for overly aggressive attacks on rank-and-file VA workers in the guise of broader accountability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is unacceptable.
