Prosecutors said he faces up to five years in prison for conspiracy and up to 20 years for each count of arms export violations and wire fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/08\/30\/federal-trial-details-black-market-for-military-equipment\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/636032388215076554-1982779jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Easy money\u2019 made selling Army weapons stolen by US soldiers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More than $1 million in weapons parts and sensitive military equipment was stolen out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and sold in a vast black market, some of it to foreign buyers through eBay, according to testimony at a federal trial this week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than $1 million in weapons parts, body armor, helmets, gun sights and other equipment was stolen and sold in a vast black market, prosecutors said. Six soldiers and another civilian pleaded guilty. One testified that Roberts was given a tour of the base to see items to be stolen. Eventually, they brought equipment back from Afghanistan and sold it by the truckload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberts, 27, testified that he did not know the soldiers were bringing him stolen equipment. He said the items he bought and sold were commonly found in surplus stores, gun stores and on eBay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But prosecutors said Roberts knowingly made hundreds of thousands of dollars supplying a vast black market for years, and his own text messages with the soldiers and others involved proved he led the conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis case is about the defendant\u2019s greed and piles of stolen military equipment,\u201d Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Jaworski told jurors Thursday in closing arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roberts\u2019 defense attorney did not give closing arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A former business partner, Cory Wilson, testified that he and Roberts would find soldiers selling military items through classified ads or on Facebook, and then ask them for more expensive and harder-to-find items. Wilson pleaded guilty to buying and selling stolen military equipment, wire fraud and violating the Arms Export Control Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers they targeted were often young and broke or needed money for drugs, Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilson said Roberts set up multiple accounts to sell the equipment on eBay.
