{"id":26769,"date":"2019-01-15T17:35:46","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T17:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/15\/these-upgrades-will-help-marines-destroy-more-tanks-and-better-protect-their-own\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:04:12","slug":"these-upgrades-will-help-marines-destroy-more-tanks-and-better-protect-their-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/15\/these-upgrades-will-help-marines-destroy-more-tanks-and-better-protect-their-own\/","title":{"rendered":"These upgrades will help Marines destroy more tanks and better protect their own"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines are making strides in both their ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/10\/05\/this-armor-wrecking-lav-with-2000-marines-and-sailors-will-be-steaming-toward-norway\/\" target=\"_blank\">destroy tanks with non-tank vehicles<\/a> and ways to protect their own tanks from incoming threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An upgraded anti-tank weapon system, mounted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/09\/21\/next-lav-could-be-light-years-ahead-of-current-model\/\" target=\"_blank\">light armored vehicles<\/a>, is an automated turret system that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/12\/03\/lavs-on-the-flight-deck-the-corps-is-testing-ways-to-boost-ship-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">fires a tube-launched<\/a>, optically-tracked, wire-guided, or TOW, missile. The new ATWS, which became operational in 2017, has a variety of features that improve operator safety and operational awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarines using the new ATWS are immediately noticing the changes, including a new far target location capability, a commander\/gunner video sight display, a relocated gunner\u2019s station, and an electric elevation and azimuth drive system, which replaced the previous noisy hydraulic system,\u201d said Steve Myers, LAV program manager with Marine Corps Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps expects to hit full operational capability by or before October.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/07\/the-aging-marine-lav-is-still-active-across-the-corps-and-now-is-also-a-museum-piece\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/636046198030590615-160122-m-wy908-014jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The aging Marine LAV is still active across the Corps &#8230; and, now, also is a museum piece<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps has yet to pick a replacement for its LAV but is actively in the hunt for one.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrently, there are 58 in service within the active fleet,\u201d said Myers. \u201cThe original equipment manufacturer delivered 91 of the 106 contracted kits and is ahead of schedule. It helps defend against anti-tank missiles and other incoming threats that tanks were previously unprepared to combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also evaluating the Iron Curtain system for its Stryker vehicle and the Iron Fist system for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. There is not a current protection system of similar design in the works for the Marine LAV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the Trophy APS was successfully tested by industry on updated versions of the LAV in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LAV has been in Marine formations for nearly four decades and is one of the oldest vehicle still in operation in the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its eventual replacement, the program dubbed advanced reconnaissance vehicle, or ARV, has been an initiative with little public information provided for at least a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But an industry day last year laid out some \u2018wish list\u2019 items that the Corps would like for the centerpiece of its lightly armored force it could feature a 30mm rather than 25mm cannon, it needs to be able to control a drone swarm and conduct electronic warfare while also acting as a battlefield
