{"id":26892,"date":"2017-07-13T21:46:12","date_gmt":"2017-07-13T21:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/07\/13\/marines-corps-looks-to-field-new-plate-carriers-and-body-armor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:55:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:55:47","slug":"marines-corps-looks-to-field-new-plate-carriers-and-body-armor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/07\/13\/marines-corps-looks-to-field-new-plate-carriers-and-body-armor\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines Corps looks to field new plate carriers and body armor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Marine Corps is planning to field lighter and better fitting plate carriers and body armor, according to officials at Marine Corps Systems Command. <br\/><br\/> The effort is a joint collaboration with the U.S. Army\u2019s Program Executive Office Soldier, which helps integrate new technologies rapidly onto the battlefield.<br\/><br\/> &#8220;Marine Corps Systems Command is changing the sizing of clothing, uniforms, personal protective and load-bearing equipment to align with the Capabilities Development Directorate\u2019s July 2016 policy update for fit attribute,&#8221; said Barbara Hamby, a spokesperson for MARCORSYSCOM. <br\/><br\/> That directorate expanded fitting requirements to include 2nd\u00a0percentile females and 98 percentile males; percentile ratings are based on anthropometric studies\u00a0of the human body. The new directorate now accommodates an additional 14,568 Marines. Now, only 3,642 Marine fall outside the updated fitting accommodation. <br\/><br\/> Marines that fall outside the new requirements will get &#8220;custom-sized products\u00a0<em>\u2014<\/em>\u00a0boots, body armor, etc.\u00a0<em>\u2014<\/em>\u00a0or size so that it does fit,&#8221; Hamby said. <br\/><br\/> Currently, Marines and the Army are working together to design a new plate carrier called the Plate Carrier Generation III. <br\/><br\/><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Plate Carrier Generation III prototype \" data-alignment=\"center\" data-object-id=\"0000015d-3c8e-d3cb-a37f-ffffacbd0000\" data-type=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/snagfilms-a.akamaihd.net\/8c\/74\/6f838c9f483391983fa9071f09c6\/plate-carrier-generation-iii-prototype.JPG\"\/><figcaption> <span>Plate Carrier Generation III prototype <\/span><\/figcaption><figcaption> <span>Photo Credit: Courtesy of Marine Corps Systems Command <\/span><\/figcaption><br\/>The new design is &#8220;less bulky, lighter in weight, and provides a smaller overall footprint than the current plate carrier while maintaining the same soft armor coverage and protection level,&#8221; Hamby told Marine Corps Times. <br\/><br\/> The new model is 23 percent lighter, according to MARCORSYSCOM. It also features sports graded shoulder straps for better fitting and reduces the length of the current protective vest by nearly 1.25 inches. <br\/><br\/> Compared to the Female Improved Outer Tactical Vest \u00a0\u2014 a version of the generation III IOTV which accommodates women and is 13 percent lighter \u2014 the new vest will be 4.8 pounds lighter and 2 inches shorter.\u00a0<br\/><br\/> The new plate carrier being developed will be gender-neutral removing the need for a separate male and female fit. <br\/><br\/> &#8220;The new sizes will include small short, x-small short, small long, and a 6-by-6 inch side-plate,&#8221;\u00a0Hamby told Marine Corps Times.\u00a0&#8220;These new sizes will provide small stature Marines with a better fit and reduce the weight that would be associated with wearing a plate larger than necessary.&#8221;\u00a0<br\/><br\/><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=8892d881-6042-4ba7-879d-2c5d097a9885\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Army and Marine Corps have teamed up to design lighter, better fitting body armor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is also looking to develop lighter body armor. Currently, Marines carry the nearly 18 pounds of protective inserts. The current inserts\u00a0have been successful at stopping current threats, according to Hamby, but &#8220;the performance comes with a cost in heavier, more expensive plates.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new project will focus on a series of ballistics testing to determine whether a smaller plate could still defeat threats faced by Marines on today&#8217;s battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end goal is to develop a series of plate options with &#8220;varying degrees of performance, weight and cost to inform decisions on future requirements for ballistic plates,&#8221; Hamby said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a host of security reasons to update body armor fielded by U.S. troops overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;From a force protection angle, the enemy has gotten their hands on our armor and had the chance to study it\/design ways to defeat it, so
