{"id":26992,"date":"2018-04-05T20:25:24","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T20:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/05\/first-west-coast-gender-integrated-marine-combat-training-class-graduates\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:41:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:41:35","slug":"first-west-coast-gender-integrated-marine-combat-training-class-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/05\/first-west-coast-gender-integrated-marine-combat-training-class-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"First West Coast gender integrated Marine Combat Training class graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early March, 39 women checked in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2018\/02\/27\/marine-faces-murder-charge-following-school-of-infantry-stabbing\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">School of Infantry-West<\/a> to start a 29-day course in combat training reserved for Marines in non-infantry roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the first time in the Corps\u2019 history that male and female Marines trained together at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/09\/three-more-women-to-attempt-the-grueling-infantry-officer-course\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">Marine Combat Training Battalion<\/a> course, or MCT, on the West Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, on Tuesday, those Marines graduated from the course at Camp Pendleton, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThirty-five women and 328 men graduated with Golf Company at Marine Combat Training Battalion,\u201d Marine Corps Training Command said in an emailed statement to Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of six Marines \u2015 four female and two male \u2015 did not complete the course, the Marine Corps said. \u201cThose who did not graduate will continue training with a new company.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two MCT courses: The other is located aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. That course has been integrated for some time, according to Marine spokesman Capt. Galvan\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has been pushing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/09\/three-more-women-to-attempt-the-grueling-infantry-officer-course\/\">gender integration<\/a> across the force as it looks to bolster its ranks with more female Marines. The Corps currently sits at just over 8 percent female, and with a goal of increasing that number to 10 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lack of exposure to female colleagues and leadership has been a repeated criticism of the Corps. It can create a false perception that female Marines aren\u2019t meeting the same standards, some say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines\u2019 gender integration progress has come under criticism from vocal critics like the Service Women\u2019s Action Network who contend the Corps\u2019 plans haven\u2019t gone far enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gender integration at SOI-West is another step by the Corps to expose young male Marines to their female peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite integration at SOI-West, the top Marine has no plans right now to open the doors of the San Diego, California, recruit depot to female recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t need it right now,\u201d Commandant Gen. Robert B. Neller told reporters in early March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are female drill instructors at the San Diego recruit depot training male recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Female recruits attend boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, where the Corps has made recent changes that have male and females at times integrated and working side by side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps hopes to train roughly 1,700 female Marines at the West Coast MCT every year, Pena previously told Marine Corps
