{"id":27562,"date":"2018-10-16T22:15:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T22:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/16\/in-sprint-to-modernize-the-corps-gobbles-up-storied-amphibious-assault-unit\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:46:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:46:14","slug":"in-sprint-to-modernize-the-corps-gobbles-up-storied-amphibious-assault-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/10\/16\/in-sprint-to-modernize-the-corps-gobbles-up-storied-amphibious-assault-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"In sprint to modernize, the Corps gobbles up storied amphibious assault unit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Combat Assault Battalion, or CAB, has unfurled its unit flag in nearly every clime and place, from the battlefields of World War II, to Korea, to Iraq. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the storied unit officially shut its doors on Oct. 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Headquartered out of Camp Schwab on Okinawa, Japan, CAB provided the Corps with amphibious assault, light armored reconnaissance and combat engineer support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a mission that has spanned nearly 76 years, but as the Corps continues to modernize its force for a near-peer fight, elements of CAB are being reallocated and realigned across the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As the Marine Corps continues to modernize the force it seeks to achieve additional warfighting capabilities and optimize the existing ones,\u201d Lt. Col. Jacob Q. Robinson, the commander of CAB, told Marine Corps Times in an email. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe deactivation of CAB has and will realign engineer, Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR), and AAV [Assault Amphibious Vehicle] capabilities across the Marine Corps with the preponderance of the capabilities remaining in the III Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), specifically 3d Marine Division,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/video\/embed\/625270\" width=\"640\"\nheight=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the reason for the unit\u2019s demise is the Corps\u2019 push to replace its legacy fleet of tracked AAVs with BAE\u2019S new eight-wheeled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/27\/is-this-the-marine-corps-next-amphibious-combat-vehicle\/\" target=_blank>Amphibious Combat Vehicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And recently, the Corps put the final death knell in the more than 40-year-old AAV vehicle when it scrapped<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/19\/the-aav-is-not-dead-yet-the-corps-wants-new-tracks-to-improve-land-and-sea-mobility\/\" target=_blank> survivability upgrades <\/a>meant to keep the old amphibious beast rolling until 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was made to \u201cbetter align programs with the National Defense Strategy and congressional guidance to reduce investment in legacy programs and focus buying power on modernization, the Marine Corps made the decision to divest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/09\/24\/us-marine-corps-kills-amphibious-assault-vehicle-upgrade-program\/\" target=_blank>AAV SU program<\/a> [AAV Survivability Upgrade program],\u201d Manny Pacheco, a Marine spokesman, told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pacheco further told Defense News that the AAV doesn\u2019t \u201cmeet the needs of modern Marine amphibious forcible entry operations,\u201d even with upgrades, the vehicle would be inadequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe introduction of the Amphibious Combat Vehicle in the near future will provide a more modern, survivable, and reliable upgrade to the current Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) and will eventually replace all AAV personnel variants,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps expects a total number of nearly 704 ACVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarine Corps Force 2025 is a strategy the Marine Corps is working towards that provides additional operational capabilities to fight in future combat environments,\u201d Robinson said in a command release. \u201cAllocations from the Combat Assault Battalion was relocated to other units as an evolutionary process.
