Marine F-35B joint strike fighter pilots can now fly conduct <\/span>realistic training missions\u00a0sorties <\/span>without ever leaving the ground thanks to a recent upgrade to their simulators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, p<\/span>Pilots with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, which is expected to\u00a0\u00a0who will likely <\/span>become the first operational F-35B squadron in late July later this summer<\/span>, got\u00a0Block 2B software upgrades giving their four simulators at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, the exact same capabilities as their real fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The software in the simulator now matches\u00a0what is on the flightline, which is really what you desire,”\u00a0said\u00a0Maj. Christopher Trent, VMFA-121’s pilot training officer. “You don’t wasn’t a software variant older than what is on the flightline,”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilots had been using\u00a0simulators with outdated software since the real aircraft are typically updated before training devices, Trent said. Now the software allows them to train as they fly, with expanded data sets and simulated weapons drops, according to Lockheed Martin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They give you the ability to replicate whatever threat \u2014\u00a0aircraft, ground defenses,” Trent said, including surface-to-air missile batteries, anti-aircraft artillery, tanks and personnel carriers, and enemy fighters with rocket-propelled grenades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But above all, they\u00a0allow\u00a0pilots to fly over simulations of real-world cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Some threats don\u2019t exist on a training range and you can\u2019t replicate country X very accurately,” he said. “Some of the best training you can get in a simulator is when it comes to replicating what aircraft will actually fight against in some areas of the world we might go to.” he added.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means if F-35B pilots are called on to fly fight <\/span>over a real city in Syria, for example, they already have a feel for buildings, streets and potential targets based on simulated training they completed. may already intimately know each building, street and potential target from simulator-based scenarios.
