The terms “rifleman” and “mortarman,” are among those that for example, <\/span>remain untouched, according to a list \u2014\u00a0obtained by Marine Corps Times on Monday \u2014\u00a0of 33 MOSs that were up for <\/span>reviewed.\u00a0And that was by careful design, said a Marine manpower <\/span>official\u00a0who spoke on the condition of anonymity since they weren’t authorized to discuss the changes<\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since all Marine are considered riflemen, the infantry rifleman military occupational specialty won’t get a new gender-neutral name.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Photo Credit: Sgt. Leaders\/Marine Corps<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n “Names that were not changed, like rifleman, are steeped in Marine Corps history and ethos,” the official said. “Things that were changed needed to be updated to align with other MOS names.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n In most cases, the word “man” will be replaced by Marine. Those changes are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The field artillery operations man MOS is expected to be changed to field artillery operations chief, since that position is typically held by a Marine in the rank of staff sergeant or above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The anti-tank missileman MOS is the only position that will pick up the word “gunner” in place of “man.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Others on the list\u00a0\u2014 like manpower officer or vertical takeoff unmanned aerial vehicle specialist\u00a0\u2014 will still include the word “man” because since <\/span>it’s part of a word that doesn’t describe the Marine doing the job.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Amphibious assault vehicle crewmen will soon be called amphibious assault vehicle Marines.
