Gen. John F. Kelliher, the deputy joint force maritime component commander, told Marine Corps Times in a Friday phone interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will be a demonstration of force and it will be kinetic, from multiple platforms,\u201d Kelliher said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Marine Corps will fire one of these Naval Strike Missiles in the Pacific there will be a sacrificial hull out there, something the Navy has scrapped,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/08\/09\/navy-marine-corps-aim-to-refine-test-modern-warfighting-concepts-in-large-scale-exercise-2021\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/210805-N-PH196-0039.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy, Marine Corps aim to refine, test modern warfighting concepts in Large Scale Exercise 2021<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The exercise aims to demonstrate the Navy\u2019s ability to employ precise, lethal and overwhelming force across 17 different time zones and involves approximately 36 live units and more than 50 virtual, constructive units, along with six Navy and Marine Corps component commands.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large Scale Exercise 2021 is spread out across 17 time zones, involves more than 25,000 participants, all three Marine expeditionary forces, five numbered fleets and is \u201cone of the largest exercises of this scale conducted by the U.S. since before World War II,\u201d Maj. Jim Stenger a Marine Corps spokesman, told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday the Marine fires will be launched from land in coordination with the Navy and Air Force, testing the three services\u2019 ability to work together, Kelliher said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps plans for a future where small units equipped with missiles capable of sinking ships spread out across the battlefield, opening up sea lanes for the U.S. Navy and ideally keeping an enemy\u2019s ships pinned down in their home ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether it is in the Atlantic or Pacific, it is all about the Marine Corps being able to provide that anti-area denial \u2014 the sea control,\u201d Kelliher said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/06\/is-expeditionary-foraging-in-the-corps-future\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Lt. Gen. Eric Smith<\/a> the current commander of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and the deputy commandant for combat development and integration, it is a simple math equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA peer adversary has to respect a Naval Strike Missile that for $1.7 million can damage a warship of almost $2 billion \u2014 and you can\u2019t find it,\u201d Smith said at the 2021 Sea-Air-Space conference Aug. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said the Corps has already shot the Raytheon-made Naval Strike Missile in excess of 100 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raytheonmissilesanddefense.com\/capabilities\/products\/naval-strike-missile\" target=\"_blank\">Raytheon<\/a>, the missile carries a 500-pound warhead, a programmable fuse and avoids missile defense systems by \u201cperforming evasive maneuvers and flying at sea-skimming altitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has been test firing the Naval Strike Missile off the back of a Remotely Operated Ground Unit for Expeditionary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/30\/marines-strap-missile-to-truck-and-strike-target-at-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">(ROGUE) fires vehicle<\/a>, which is essentially an unmanned, stripped down Joint Light Tactical Vehicle with with the cab removed and a launch system strapped to the back<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Strike Missile combined with the ROGUE fires vehicle is collectively known as the Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, or NMESIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith said the NMESIS will be able to avoid enemy detection within the first island chain of an enemy in the Pacific and strike at enemy vessels wherever they appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood luck finding that, because you won\u2019t,\u201d said Smith, who is slated to be the next<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/08\/top-general-on-force-design-slated-to-be-next-marine-assistant-commandant\/\" target=\"_blank\"> assistant commandant of the Marine Corps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps will use NMESIS to try and take out the scrapped hull Sunday, as the Corps combines the dispersed tactics with
