Initial reports said the fighter may have been from Israel. The passenger aircraft landed at an airport in Beirut, Lebanon, afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a release Thursday evening, CENTCOM spokesman Navy Capt. Bill Urban said that the F-15 was on a \u201croutine air mission\u201d near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/02\/16\/iran-backed-group-launches-attack-near-small-garrison-in-syria-housing-american-special-operators\/\" target=_blank>al-Tanf garrison base<\/a> in southern Syria at the time. Al-Tanf is the home of a small number of American commandos who train local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/10\/15\/us-spec-ops-secrets-could-fall-into-hands-of-russians-and-syrians-in-pullout\/\" target=_blank>anti-Islamic State<\/a> fighters, but some national security experts argue the base is intended to check Iranian influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2019\/12\/11\/congress-is-worried-about-an-iranian-threat-to-a-small-garrison-of-us-commandos-in-syria\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/tanf-syria.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Congress is worried about an Iranian threat to a small garrison of US commandos in Syria<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Located in a remote desert outpost in southern Syria, al-Tanf is far removed from the majority of the anti-ISIS fight raging in northern Syria \u2014 instead it\u2019s been the scene of deadly clashes between U.S. forces and Iranian and Syrian regime backed militias.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urban said that the F-15 conducted the inspection \u201cto ensure the safety of coalition personnel at al-Tanf garrison.\u201d When the F-15 identified the aircraft as a passenger plane, its pilot \u201csafely opened distance\u201d from the Mahan aircraft, Urban said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe professional intercept was conducted in accordance with international standards,\u201d Urban said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian state TV said on Thursday that the passenger plane was \u201charassed\u201d by fighter jets, according to the Associated Press. Reports said the interception forced the pilot to sharply change altitude, flying low and causing slight injuries among some of the passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Iranian TV report, the fighter jets came within a distance of 100 meters (328 feet) of the Iranian Airbus A310. The pilot quickly took the aircraft to a lower altitude to avoid a collision with the jets, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data from the flight recorded by website <a href=\"http:\/\/FlightRadar24.com\" target=_blank>FlightRadar24.com<\/a> showed the airliner climbed from 34,000 feet to 34,600 feet in under two minutes around the time of the incident, then dropped back down to 34,000 feet within a minute after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iranian state TV quoted the pilot of the Iranian plane as saying the fighter jets&#8217; pilots had identified themselves as American over radio communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-iran-israel-airline-beirut\/all-passengers-on-iranian-plane-exited-only-minor-injuries-beirut-airport-head-idUSKCN24O2XQ\" target=_blank>Reuters reported<\/a> that Beirut airport head Fadi Hassan said that all passengers exited the aircraft after it landed, and there were only minor injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iranian news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tasnimnews_Fa\/status\/1286401561426567168\" target=_blank>Tasnim News said<\/a> Iran\u2019s government had told United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres that \u201cif any incident happens to this plane [on the way back to Iran], Iran will hold the United States responsible.\u201d Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry said Iran is investigating the incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mahan Air is a privately owned airline based in Tehran that flies across the Mideast. In 2011, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned the airline for allegedly \u201cproviding financial, material and technological support\u201d to Iran\u2019s Quds Force, the expeditionary arm of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
