{"id":28148,"date":"2016-02-08T22:19:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T22:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/02\/08\/religious-sign-at-mcb-hawaii-again-under-fire\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:04:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:04:24","slug":"religious-sign-at-mcb-hawaii-again-under-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2016\/02\/08\/religious-sign-at-mcb-hawaii-again-under-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Religious sign at MCB Hawaii again under fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its continuing battle\u00a0to have a &#8220;God bless the military&#8221; sign at Marine Corps Base Hawaii taken down or moved to chapel grounds, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation says\u00a0it will pursue federal litigation if it is not permitted to erect nine similar signs referencing other deities or no deity at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commanding officer of the base ruled in October that the original sign\u00a0would remain where it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This sign will remain in its present location and not be altered in any way,&#8221; Col. Sean Killeen wrote in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.militarytimes.com\/static\/pdfs\/Letter-to-Mr-Weinstein-New.pdf\">a Oct. 9 letter to Mikey Weinstein<\/a>, founder and president of the MRFF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Killeen did not, however, respond to the foundation&#8217;s demand that, if the sign were not moved or taken down, its clients\u00a0be allowed to erect additional signs next to it. In a letter today to Killeen,\u00a0MRFF Legal Affairs Coordinator\u00a0Tobanna Barker reiterated that demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;[Y]ou have remained\u00a0suspiciously silent on the option to construct additional signs containing messages of support\u00a0on\u00a0behalf of\u00a0MRFF&#8217;s 117 clients under your command practicing a variety of religious faiths, as well as no faith,&#8221; Barker wrote. &#8220;In\u00a0the event you were hoping that remaining silent would make this issue disappear, we must disappoint\u00a0you. We take constitutional violations very seriously and we aren&#8217;t going anywhere. We demand that\u00a0you timely respond, one way or the other, so we can either begin planning construction for sign placement\u00a0or preparing for aggressive federal litigation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sign at the corner of E Street and 2nd Street on base, which reads &#8220;God bless the military, their families and the civilians who work with them,&#8221; was erected not long after the 9\/11 terrorist attacks on the United States,\u00a0as service members were preparing to deploy, according to base officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weinstein has said his clients demand the right to build and display signs that start with &#8220;Yehweh bless,&#8221; &#8220;Allah bless,&#8221; &#8220;Odin blesses,&#8221; Vishnu blesses,&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;Goddess bless&#8221; and &#8220;There Is No God.&#8221; He later added three more groups to his original list of six that want their own signs\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the Church of Satan, the Baha&#8217;i faith and the &#8220;Jedi Church.&#8221; The latter group&#8217;s sign would begin &#8220;May the Force be with the Military &#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There is simply no compelling state interest that would justify allowing a public message of support from\u00a0only one religious viewpoint \u2014 to the tyrannical exclusion of all others,&#8221; Barker wrote in\u00a0today&#8217;s letter to Killeen. &#8220;If you claim that the sign is\u00a0lawful because it gives support to the service members at MCB Hawaii, then messages of support are\u00a0clearly allowed to be constructed on the base you command, sir.
