{"id":28218,"date":"2021-04-15T15:31:53","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T15:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/15\/first-male-marine-corps-recruits-graduate-from-previously-all-female-boot-camp-battalion\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:48:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:48:52","slug":"first-male-marine-corps-recruits-graduate-from-previously-all-female-boot-camp-battalion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/15\/first-male-marine-corps-recruits-graduate-from-previously-all-female-boot-camp-battalion\/","title":{"rendered":"First male Marine Corps recruits graduate from previously all-female boot camp battalion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The previously all-female 4th Recruit Training Battalion has graduated four of its first-ever male platoons alongside two female platoons and included the first male drill instructors assigned within the battalion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On March 26, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, completed training and graduated with the coed mix at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, according to a Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcrdpi.marines.mil\/News\/Article\/2572798\/first-male-recruits-graduate-recruit-training-from-4th-battalion\/\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Company staff included both male and female Marines. Platoon staff comprised of drill instructors of the same gender as the recruits they were training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously male staff such as company and series commanders, first sergeants and chief drill instructors had been assigned to 4th Battalion. But the assignment of male drill instructors to Papa Company for the four male platoons was a first, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcrdpi.marines.mil\/News\/Article\/2572798\/first-male-recruits-graduate-recruit-training-from-4th-battalion\/\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/12\/15\/women-will-attend-boot-camp-at-marine-corps-recruit-depot-san-diego-for-first-time-in-history\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5728256.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Women will attend boot camp at San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot for first time in history<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps\u2019 West Coast recruit depot traditionally has trained enlisted men born west of the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is the last of the four services to integrate its entry-level training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army began integrating its basic training in 1994, the Navy in 1992 and the Air Force in the mid-1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Papa Company Senior Drill Instructor Staff Sgt. Gregorio Montes said male and female recruits training together in the same company is nothing new aboard the depot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe training is the same and the standards are the same,\u201d he said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what your training company is \u2026 we\u2019re doing the same thing, the same training evolutions. With [male drill instructors] being at 4th Battalion, we\u2019re just bringing it to light. We\u2019re going to show that we are training the recruits the same and making the same standard of Marine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Papa Company Commander, Capt. Adan Rivera, said in the press release that having males assigned to 4th Battalion showed that male and female recruits are held to the same standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe recruits, when they go out and [conduct physical training], they will be side-by-side working out together,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen they go on the rifle range they\u2019ll be shooting right next to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To brand-new recruits, it\u2019s the first introduction to Marine Corps training so that\u2019s just the way it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI honestly didn\u2019t pay that much attention to it,\u201d Pfc. Jahlil Johnson said in the press release. \u201cIt was when we had the first meeting with the senior drill instructor, when he said, \u201cyou\u2019re making history,\u201d I was like \u2026 wow, okay this is a big thing. At first I don\u2019t think anybody grasped what was going on, it was like \u201cwe\u2019re here to train, let\u2019s train.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, all female recruits were assigned only to 4th Recruit Training Battalion. That was until Jan. 5, 2019, following pressure from Congress, when India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, began its training cycle with one female platoon and five male platoons. Following that change, female recruits have been assigned to all four of the battalions at Parris Island, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From January 2019 to April 2020, the Parris Island, South Carolina, recruit depot completed nine training cycles with one all-female platoon and five all-male platoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, the Corps kicked off coed training at its only other boot camp, in San Diego. That also followed the integrated companies model with an estimated 60 female recruits forming a platoon with Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, alongside male recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the graduation of the coed 4th Battalion, the depot is now training its 15th coed company, Capt. Bryan McDonnell, depot spokesman, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/04\/14\/first-ever-male-marines-graduate-historically-all-female-boot-camp-training-battalion.html\" target=_blank>Military.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 4th Battalion squad bay is smaller than some of the other squad bays at Parris Island, South Carolina, McDonnell told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/04\/14\/first-ever-male-marines-graduate-historically-all-female-boot-camp-training-battalion.html\" target=_blank>Military.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because more recruits arrive in the summer months, the depot had the right mix of male and female recruits to assign them to 4th Battalion and use that space, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because the coed companies live in the same barracks building but stay in different squad bays to sleep and bathe, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further integration is headed to the depots. The 2020 National Defense Authorization Act gave Parris Island, South Carolina, five years and San Diego eight years to incorporate integrated male and female platoons, Marine Corps Times previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/12\/15\/women-will-attend-boot-camp-at-marine-corps-recruit-depot-san-diego-for-first-time-in-history\/\" target=_blank>reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Female recruits have trained at Parris Island, South Carolina, since Feb. 23, 1949. They began as 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, which was redesignated in 1954 as the Woman Recruit Training Battalion. It was redesignated Woman Recruit Training Command in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decade later, in 1986, the command then became 4th Recruit Training Battalion as part of Recruit Training Regiment. Papa Company was activated in 1996 to accommodate the higher number of female recruits arriving at Parris Island, South Carolina according to the Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcrdpi.marines.mil\/News\/Article\/2572798\/first-male-recruits-graduate-recruit-training-from-4th-battalion\/\"
