{"id":28234,"date":"2017-08-15T18:38:18","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T18:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/08\/15\/white-supremacist-group-leader-is-former-marine-recruiter\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:59:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:59:15","slug":"white-supremacist-group-leader-is-former-marine-recruiter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/2017\/08\/15\/white-supremacist-group-leader-is-former-marine-recruiter\/","title":{"rendered":"White supremacist group leader is former Marine Corps recruiter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Marine veteran has been identified as the leader of a white supremacist group whose members marched at Saturday\u2019s \u201cUnite the Right\u201d&nbsp;rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a counter-protester was killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news site <a>Splinter<\/a>&nbsp;first reported on Monday that former Marine recruiter Dillon Ulysses Hopper is the leader of white supremacist group Vanguard America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopper served in the Marine Corps from July 2006 until Jan. 30, leaving the Corps as a staff sergeant, according to Manpower &amp; Reserve Affairs. He deployed to Iraq from January 2008 to January 2009 and to Afghanistan from July 2010 to February 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Alex Fields Jr. was arrested Saturday after allegedly killing a woman by ramming a car into counter-protesters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fields, 20, was charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bail.&nbsp;At the rally he was photographed behind a shield bearing the emblem of Vanguard America, according to The Associated Press. The group has denied Fields was a member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fields began Army basic training in August 2015 but was released from active-duty four months later for \u201cfailure to meet training standards,\u201d officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopper served as a recruiter from 2011 to 2014 and held two other military occupational specialties during his time in the Corps: fire support Marine and information security technician, Corps officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attempts to reach Hopper for comment on Tuesday were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vanguard America posted a statement on Twitter stating that all of its \u201cmembers had been safely evacuated by the time of the incident.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carla Hill, a Marine vet and investigator for the Anti-Defamation League, tracks Hopper\u2019s group.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not see him at the rally over the weekend; and, of course, he apparently said he wasn\u2019t there \u2015 but many of his members were,\u201d said Hill, who left the Marine Corps in 1993 as a sergeant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"559\" height=\"563\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Vanguard-America.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Vanguard-America.jpg.jpg 559w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Vanguard-America.jpg.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Vanguard-America.jpg.jpg?resize=298,300 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopper appeared at an April 29 white supremacists rally in Pikeville, Kentucky, that was timed to mark Hitler\u2019s birthday, Hill said. At the rally, Hopper said he had been the leader of Vanguard America for more than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to being active on Twitter, Vanguard America frequently posted white supremacist literature on university campuses during the most recent school year, Hill said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a video of the April rally posted online, Hopper said Vanguard America has a presence in 28 states with roughly 200 members. He added that people in Canada, Britain and Australia want to form international chapters of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAssociation or participation with hate or extremist groups of any kind is directly contradictory to the core values of honor, courage and commitment that we stand for as Marines and isn\u2019t tolerated by the Marine Corps,\u201d said Maj. Garron Garn, a spokesman for Manpower &amp; Reserve Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has multiple layers of screening to make sure that applicants with ties to white supremacist groups or other criminal gangs are not allowed to attend boot camp, Garn said.
