{"id":28267,"date":"2015-03-25T16:22:45","date_gmt":"2015-03-25T16:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/03\/25\/reports-u-s-and-syria-in-talks-to-free-missing-journalist\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:44:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:44:33","slug":"reports-u-s-and-syria-in-talks-to-free-missing-journalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/03\/25\/reports-u-s-and-syria-in-talks-to-free-missing-journalist\/","title":{"rendered":"Reports: U.S. and Syria in talks to free missing journalist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negotiations are reportedly underway between U.S. and Syrian officials to secure the release of Austin Tice, a Marine veteran-turned-journalist who has been missing for more than two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talks between U.S. officials and Syrian President Bashar Assad&#8217;s government began after &#8220;an emissary representing the U.S. government&#8221; visited Tice, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">an unnamed European diplomat told Le Figaro, <\/span>according to a French newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2015\/03\/24\/260833\/french-newspaper-us-syria-in-talks.html\" title=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2015\/03\/24\/260833\/french-newspaper-us-syria-in-talks.html\">cited in McClatchy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tice, a former <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">veteran Marine <\/span>captain, served as an infantry officer and deployed to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in <\/span>Iraq and Afghanistan. He went missing in Syria in August 2012 after putting <span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> Tice put <\/span>a law degree at Georgetown University on hold <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in 2012 <\/span>to travel to Syria, where he filed award-winning stories for CBS News, McClatchy Newspapers and the Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Assad&#8217;s government has not publicly admitted to holding Tice, the alleged negotiations would mark a rare <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the first <\/span>dialogue between the Obama administration and Syrian officials since civil unrest quickly cascaded into major conflict in 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The McClatchy report did not say whether there is a timeline associated with releasing Tice back to his family. Last month, Tice&#8217;s father Marc <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">his family <\/span>said his family had <span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> but they have <\/span>been <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">re<\/span>assured his son <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">he <\/span>is alive and is not in the hands of Islamic State militants, McClatchy reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tice&#8217;s family released a statement about the new reported developments <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinticefamily.com\/\" title=\"http:\/\/www.austinticefamily.com\/\">on their website<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The release of any hostage is a blessing and great joy to their family and friends. We sincerely hope everything possible is being done for the safe return of our son, and, as ever, we hope to see Austin safely home as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>In February, Tice&#8217;s family joined with the journalist advocacy group Reporters Without Borders to launch a social media campaign to draw attention to their son&#8217;s situation. They shared photos of themselves, donning blindfolds, using <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">with <\/span>the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">social media<\/span> hashtag #FreeAustinTice. Supporters were encouraged to share similar photos and sign a petition for the White House to continue to search for and free Tice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Negotiations
