Chris Escamilla, branch head for Plans, Programs and Budget in the Marine Corps Manpower Plans and Policy Division, told Marine Corps Times on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/03\/corps-ditching-procons-for-new-evaluation-system-for-junior-marines\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6159344.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Corps ditching pro\/cons for new junior Marine evaluation system<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The JEPES system will consist of four equally weighted parts, including warfighting, physical toughness and mental agility.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The need to increase meritorious promotion opportunities for sergeants is the result of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/10\/31\/corps-increases-time-in-service-requirements-for-sergeants-and-staff-sergeants-revamps-re-enlistment-to-increase-retention\/\" target=_blank>change in policy<\/a> that doubled the time in service requirement to be promoted to sergeant from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/28\/the-corps-rapid-push-to-modernize-drives-first-extensive-rank-structure-review-in-20-years\/\" target=_blank>24 months to 48 months.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps decided to increase the time in service requirements for sergeants in the hopes of creating more seasoned leaders taking on the role as the \u201cbackbone of the Marine Corps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move also was meant to help normalize promotion rates across military occupational specialties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the change may have led to more seasoned sergeants, it also led to a slight shortage across the force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Marine Corps currently possesses a healthy sergeant inventory,\u201d Escamilla said in a Wednesday email. \u201cHowever, increasing the time-in-service requirement for promotion to four years has slightly reduced the sergeant inventory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe increased allocation of meritorious promotions to sergeant will mitigate this inventory reduction and, more importantly, provide an opportunity for commanders to conduct talent management and reward high performers through early advancement,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increased promotion opportunities will not come for other ranks however, as the Marine Corps is not currently considering similar for changes for any other rank, Escamilla said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Disclosure: Col.
