{"id":28312,"date":"2018-06-25T16:31:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-25T16:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/25\/the-corps-modernization-efforts-are-costing-millions-in-base-upgrades\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:08:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:08:31","slug":"the-corps-modernization-efforts-are-costing-millions-in-base-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/25\/the-corps-modernization-efforts-are-costing-millions-in-base-upgrades\/","title":{"rendered":"The Corps\u2019 modernization efforts are costing millions in base upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Costs to upgrade Marine Corps bases to house new aircraft and amphibious vehicles and to support modernization efforts are proving exceedingly expensive, with costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Senate\u2019s version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/congress\/2018\/06\/06\/us-senate-panel-sets-sights-russia-china-in-major-defense-bill\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">annual defense legislation<\/a> approved $199,630,000 in funding for construction projects at Camp Pendleton, California, $133,860,000 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, and $326,845,000 for projects on Guam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soaring figures are partially the result of the Corps\u2019 efforts to modernize its force and ongoing construction projects to house nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/digital-show-dailies\/2018\/04\/10\/amid-rising-threats-the-corps-flexes-to-the-pacific\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">5,000 Marines on Guam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have quite a bit of hangar and utilities work to support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/21\/the-corps-has-lost-its-first-f-35\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">first F-35 squadrons<\/a> assigned to MCAS Cherry Point,\u201d said Marine spokesman Rex Runyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Camp Pendleton, the Corps is building a new maintenance facility to support Assault Amphibious Vehicles, or AAVs, and the Corps\u2019 latest Amphibious Combat Vehicle, or ACV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE was recently awarded a contract to build the Corps\u2019 new eight-wheeled ACV 1.1 vehicle, which will ultimately replace the legacy AAVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new AAV\/ACV facility could cost as high as $49 million, according to the funds approved in the Senate version of defense budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/06\/19\/bae-wins-marine-corps-contract-to-build-new-amphibious-combat-vehicle\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ACVBAEOPTEST2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">BAE wins Marine Corps contract to build new amphibious combat vehicle<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Marine Corps has awarded BAE Systems a low-rate initial production contract to build its new Amphibious Combat Vehicle.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Senate also approved $10 million for a full motion trainer for Marines aboard Camp Pendleton and $71 million for a new mess hall and warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy also has some projects at the sprawling southern California base to support Landing Craft Air Cushion ships, according to Runyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Corps is dishing out roughly $51 million for a new complex for 2nd Radio Battalion headquartered at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Radio battalions in the Corps provide tactical level signals intelligence and electronic warfare support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction projects are still ongoing on Guam to house nearly 5,000 Marines.
