{"id":28635,"date":"2019-05-21T15:01:51","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T15:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/21\/victory-begins-with-doing-the-right-thing-in-garrison-this-marine-master-guns-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:52:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:52:03","slug":"victory-begins-with-doing-the-right-thing-in-garrison-this-marine-master-guns-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/opinion\/commentary\/2019\/05\/21\/victory-begins-with-doing-the-right-thing-in-garrison-this-marine-master-guns-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Victory begins with doing the right thing in garrison, this Marine master guns says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>The following is an opinion piece and does not necessarily reflect the views of Marine Corps Times or its staff.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point in time, you\u2019d have to be on another planet to not at least have heard of the policy letter by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/02\/crackdown-at-lejeune-inside-the-2nd-marine-division-commanders-controversial-call-for-discipline\/\" target=\"_blank\">commanding general of 2nd Marine Division<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/04\/18\/lejeunes-2nd-marine-division-mandates-daily-routine-citing-poor-discipline-and-long-hair\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. Gen. David Furness.<\/a> You also probably have heard the reaction of many Marines and anonymous individuals. While I am not a current member of 2nd Marine Division at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/18\/norway-deployments-frozen-after-camp-lejeune-cleans-up-from-hurricane-florence\/\" target=\"_blank\">Camp Lejeune, North Carolina<\/a>, I also have thoughts on this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to understand the \u00adcontext behind this policy. The theme is attention to detail, accountability and discipline. Why? Why is it \u00adimportant for us as Marines, or those in the joint force, to be accountable for our actions and to have the \u00adself-discipline our leaders demand?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/06\/north-carolina-raider-theft-rings-marines-stole-tactical-gear-vehicle-parts-flashbang-grenades-and-pawned-off-some-of-the-loot\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Security Strategy,<\/a> or NSS, recognizes a return of great power competition, stating that China and Russia are fielding military capabilities \u201cdesigned to deny America access in times of crisis and to contest our ability to operate freely in critical commercial zones during peacetime.\u201d What this means for us is an operating environment where information operations, cyberspace and the electromagnetic spectrum are all contested \u2014 where the ability to share information and communicate between echelons of command will often be degraded, if functional at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/02\/crackdown-at-lejeune-inside-the-2nd-marine-division-commanders-controversial-call-for-discipline\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4890101.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Crackdown at Lejeune: Inside the 2nd Marine Division commander\u2019s controversial call for discipline<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Why the commanding general of 2nd Marine Division is not backing down.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/03\/28\/seac-is-back-troxell-reinstated-to-duty-after-ig-investigation\/\" target=_blank>Command Sgt. Maj. John Troxell,<\/a> has stated that our noncommissioned and petty officers are our greatest competitive advantage. As he has said, we are \u201c\u00adempowered to execute disciplined initiative within their commander\u2019s intent, apply agile, adaptive thinking and accomplish the mission, whether that be in combat, during training, in garrison.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What both of these leaders and the NSS call for is a focus on the \u00addiscipline necessary for conflict with a peer adversary. In a degraded \u00adenvironment where entire units may be decimated, our \u00adjunior enlisted and company grade officers will lead the fight. They will not have the luxury of clear communication with higher \u00adheadquarters. They will have to execute based on the intent they were last \u00adgiven, and \u00addemonstrate the discipline and inspirational \u00adleadership necessary to go on when all signs point to retreating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2001 I was a young staff sergeant and had just reported to 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, via a permanent change of station from Hawaii. The first morning at Twentynine Palms, I went to \u00adSubway for lunch in civilian clothes. When I went inside, a corporal told me that I had to leave and come back when I was in \u00adappropriate civilian attire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My crime that day was being in flip flops, which had become my norm while in Hawaii. That corporal was not interested in my rank, nor was I interested in debating the policy: He was right. The standard applied to all, regardless of rank, and I appreciated that Marine setting me straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all joined the Corps for many different reasons, but none of which to lower the standard or blemish our history. What Maj. Gen. \u00adFurness is asking us is nothing we didn\u2019t \u00adalready sign up for. Basic customs and \u00adcourtesies, a professional appearance, and to be that \u201cworthy successor\u201d our 13th \u00adcommandant, Gen. John Lejeune, asked of us via his birthday message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Superbowl champion coach Vince Lombardi was once asked what it took to be No. 1. He said, \u201c\u00adWinning is not a sometime thing; it\u2019s an all the time thing. You don\u2019t win once in a while; you don\u2019t do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a \u00adhabit. Unfortunately, so is losing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, victory comes at a different cost, and it begins with doing the right thing in garrison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the anonymous hero and \u00adsocial media expert will continue to flex faceless muscles while mocking our call to standards, let\u2019s take this policy letter as a call to get back to brilliance at the basics, to empower NCOs to lead and set the standard of excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operating environment of the future may call for it \u2014 our Corps deserves it, our Nation demands it, and the Marines on the left and right of us rely on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Master Gunnery Sgt.
