{"id":28717,"date":"2018-08-17T20:08:35","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T20:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/17\/the-transformation-is-complete-recruit-mullet-becomes-a-marine\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:52:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:52:58","slug":"the-transformation-is-complete-recruit-mullet-becomes-a-marine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/2018\/08\/17\/the-transformation-is-complete-recruit-mullet-becomes-a-marine\/","title":{"rendered":"The transformation is complete. \u2018Recruit Mullet\u2019 becomes a Marine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, a photograph depicting a young recruit sporting a mullet and Budweiser T-shirt making his initial call home aboard the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/10\/12\/big-change-to-boot-camp-recruits-will-spend-one-week-in-phase-4\/\" target=_blank>recruit depot in San Diego<\/a>, California, captured America\u2019s heart and admittedly a few laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RecruitMullet\/\">\u201cRecruit Mullet\u201d<\/a> by current and former Marines\u2014 the \u201credneck\u201d recruit, as his uncle, retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. Mike Voorhees describes him \u2014 has made his way from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/05\/03\/top-marine-no-more-gender-integration-changes-at-boot-camp-on-horizon\/\" target=_blank> yellow footprints at the recruit depot <\/a>and through the arduous crucible to complete his transformation into a Marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, Aug. 17, the once former recruit, whose real name is Daniel, graduated with his Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion peers from boot camp in a ceremony held aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The famous hairdo and T-shirt combination brazenly sported by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/11\/01\/hundreds-of-marine-recruits-sick-at-san-diego-boot-camp\/\" target=_blank> young recruit<\/a> originally was part of a joke for his high school graduation and follow on celebration, according to his uncle. Daniel actually left for boot camp wearing his grandfather\u2019s button up shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before his high school graduation, a barber noted to Daniel that it was \u201cfree mullet Monday,\u201d the whole thing kind of \u201cstarted off as a joke,\u201d Voorhees told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m going to bring mullets back,\u201d Daniel said, according to his uncle\u2019s recounting of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the mullet really didn\u2019t start to take true form until about a week or so out before Daniel shipped to recruit training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the Budweiser T-shirt \u2014 the family picked those up at a local Walmart for Daniel\u2019s school graduation party. The family rented a party boat on Navajo Lake, New Mexico with family and friends donning the T-shirts. Voorhees said the family wasn\u2019t aware Daniel had the shirt on when he left for boot camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI guess you could call him a redneck,\u201d Voorhees said about his nephew. \u201cHe kind of takes after us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before joining the Corps, Daniel used to drive Bobcats, dump trucks, and dirt bikes around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His uncle says Daniel has gained some interest in the Marine recon community, but his current contract is for motor transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following recruit training, Daniel will head for basic infantry training for non-infantry Marines and then to his initial school house to train for his primary job field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The famous picture of Daniel\u2019s phone call home from boot camp will likely follow him around for his entire career in the Corps. His uncle says his nephew is aware of his fame, as drill instructors from other platoons used to come over to meet the \u201cfamous mullet guy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it also wasn\u2019t Daniel\u2019s only phone call home. Daniel was afforded another opportunity to make a phone call to his folks following his platoon\u2019s victory in initial drill.
