Qassem Soleimani<\/a>, Iran\u2019s top general and the architect of its regional military activities. Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles at U.S. troops in Iraq, without wounding anyone, and accidentally shot down a Ukrainian jetliner near Tehran, killing all 176 on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/13\/us-points-to-dissent-in-iran-in-wake-of-deadly-drone-strike\/\" target=_blank>Heightened military activity<\/a> and increased political tensions in this region continue to pose serious threats to commercial vessels,\u201d the U.S. said in a maritime warning. \u201cAssociated with these threats is a potential for miscalculation or misidentification that could lead to aggressive actions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/14\/us-officials-cite-deterrence-to-defend-lethal-drone-strike\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20014048344048.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US officials cite deterrence to defend lethal drone strike<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General William Barr said deterrence was a key component of the strike. But they stopped short of saying definitively that no specific plot was broken up.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said vessels transiting the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 through which one-third of all oil traded by sea passes \u2014 could encounter GPS interference or communications jamming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said some vessels have reported communications from \u201cunknown entities falsely claiming to be U.S. or coalition warships.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said ships contacted by Iranian forces should identify themselves and say that they are proceeding in accordance with international law. It advised ships to refuse to allow Iranian forces to board but not to forcibly resist them, and to immediately contact the U.S. Fifth Fleet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran was accused of sabotaging oil tankers in the Persian Gulf last year. It denied those allegations, but acknowledged seizing a British-flagged oil tanker in response to the impounding of an Iranian oil tanker by authorities in Gibraltar. The Iranian tanker was suspected of intending to violate sanctions to deliver oil to Syria, a close ally of Iran. Both ships were released weeks later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tensions are rooted in President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to withdraw the U.S. from Iran\u2019s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and to impose \u201cmaximum\u201d economic sanctions.
