{"id":31138,"date":"2020-01-06T17:33:35","date_gmt":"2020-01-06T17:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/01\/06\/new-in-2020-ongoing-marine-weapon-changes-are-making-squads-deadlier\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:08:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:08:49","slug":"new-in-2020-ongoing-marine-weapon-changes-are-making-squads-deadlier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/01\/06\/new-in-2020-ongoing-marine-weapon-changes-are-making-squads-deadlier\/","title":{"rendered":"New in 2020: These Marine weapons changes will make squads deadlier"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Marines began procuring certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/11\/22\/we-are-the-front-line-how-the-top-marine-wants-the-corps-sinking-ships-shooting-down-planes-and-killing-enemy-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\">weapons upgrades <\/a>such as a new service rifle, a new optic and new sniper rifle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/06\/13\/no-more-army-adviser-brigades-or-amphib-ships-this-proposed-report-could-radically-change-how-the-services-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">many Marines<\/a> have yet to see those land in their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This coming year, much of the Corps will finally have those options in their armory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last of the M27s to come into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/10\/30\/the-magtf-is-no-longer-sacred-the-marine-corps-is-looking-at-other-ways-to-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps <\/a>are expected to be in the hands of each infantryman from platoon commander and below by mid-2021, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M27 is the 5.56mm replacement for the M16 rifle and M4 carbine for all infantry Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/11\/08\/marine-grunt-2020-how-the-rapid-transformation-of-small-arms-is-amping-up-the-rifleman\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/16_9_Tile_Marine_Illustration_2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine grunt 2020: How the rapid transformation of small arms is amping up the rifleman<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In the span of an enlistment, the Marine infantryman has seen weapons changes that previously took decades.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weapon already has increased lethality among the infantry Marines, experts said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 30-round capacity rifle can outrange the M4 by 100 to 150 meters. The Corps also is using a version of the same weapon as its squad-designated marksman rifle, the M38.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And to maximize the advances of the M38 and the M27s, the Marines have the squad rangefinder to increase the first shot probability of hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps also selected the Squad Common Optic, or SCO, to better leverage the M27\u2019s accuracy, and put out a request in 2019 for a scope to engage at the 600-meter to 900-meter range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines will begin procuring the SCO in late 2020 and fielding in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For snipers, the Mk13 Mod 7 sniper rifle was picked to replace the M40 sniper rifle, which has been in service since the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M40 fires the same caliber as the M240 machine gun, 7.62mm, which has an effective range up to 800m.
