Gen. Stephen Neary was fired Tuesday from his command of Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa by Marine Commandant Gen. David Berger, according to the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNeary was relieved due to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to serve in command,\u201d said a Tuesday press release from Headquarters Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/13\/commander-of-marine-unit-involved-in-aav-accident-that-killed-9-relieved\/\" target=_blank>under investigation <\/a>for alleged use of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/10\/two-men-arrested-in-plot-to-kidnap-michigan-governor-were-marine-veterans\/\" target=_blank>racial slur<\/a> during physical training outside the Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa headquarters in B\u00f6blingen, Germany, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/marine-corps-general-under-investigation-for-using-racial-slur-is-relieved-of-duty-1.649236\" target=_blank>Stars and Stripes first reported. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/14\/commander-of-marine-unit-involved-in-aav-accident-that-killed-9-relieved\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5517471.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Commander fired after Marine Corps AAV accident that killed 9<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Col. Michael Regner, commander of the unit involved in July\u2019s amphibious assault vehicle accident, was relieved of his job Tuesday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neary allegedly asked junior Marines how they felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/02\/26\/another-marine-is-being-investigated-for-neo-nazi-ties-amid-concerns-about-white-supremacy-in-the-ranks\/\" target=_blank>about the N-word<\/a> while they were conducting physical training with rap music using the word on in the background, \u201cwhich prompted Neary to ask the junior Marines how they would feel if he said it,\u201d and then said it, a lance corporal present told Stripes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, Capt. Joseph Butterfield told Marine Corps Times Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general joined the Corps in 1988 and was a career infantry officer who served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm as a company commander and as a battalion commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to his official unit biography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neary took command of Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa July 8, according to a Marine Corps press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Col.
