Either scenario would see Marines fight without a significant technological or logistical advantage for the first time in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make up for that lost advantage, the Corps is focusing on making each Marine better than their near-peer equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reach that goal the Corps is looking to create a human performance center that will be a Marine\u2019s one-stop shop for mental, spiritual and physical fitness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur nation\u2019s strategic advantage is not in things, it is in the minds and abilities of the people in uniform,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/02\/every-marine-a-rifleman-still-relevant-says-sergeant-major-of-the-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy Black<\/a> told reporters Thursday at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/05\/13\/marine-corps-to-re-evaluate-body-composition-standards\/?contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fmarine-corps-times%22%2C%22from%22%3A315%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Marine Corps to re-evaluate body composition standards<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black said the Corps is running experiments to determine what the human performance center should look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One such experiment took place at the School of Infantry\u2013East, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where Marines going through the pilot Infantry Marine Course were provided an experimental human performance center in the battalion\u2019s headquarters building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere, they have free range to use equipment, tools and guidance from professionals with the capabilities to advise Marines on the total fitness factors \u2015 from spiritual fitness to physical fitness,\u201d a Marine Corps press release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though squats, deadlifts and bench presses will likely remain a key factor in many Marines\u2019 after work gym visits, the Corps will have a different look for the gyms provided at the human performance centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black said modern college athletic training rooms have more \u201cstretchy bands\u201d and \u201cbouncy balls,\u201d than free weights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd they perform better than they did when they picked the heavy thing up, pushed the heavy thing forward or backwards, do the heavy squats, it\u2019s different, with a better performance outcome,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new look gyms, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/26\/after-covid-19-delay-marine-corps-adds-more-athletic-trainers-force-fitness-instructors\/\" target=\"_blank\">force fitness instructors<\/a> and athletic trainers the Corps is sending into the fleet, will create workout programs based on the specific needs of Marines based off job requirements and current performance level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Smarter not harder<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps also will take that \u201csmarter not harder\u201d mindset out of the gym and into the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t train for sleep deprivation, you are either tired or you\u2019re not,\u201d Black said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are going to operate in environments where for 36 hours, 24 hours being awake happens. Ok, well how many times do you do that before making wrong decisions in the training environment?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines will still be pushed to the limit under the Corps\u2019 new human performance mindset, but commanders should have a better understanding of what that limit is and how to safely get Marines there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow do we how do we make someone stronger, while at the same time make them better at doing all the things that caused the injury to begin with,\u201d is a question the Marine Corps is working to answer, Black said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps is also looking to change its culture that historically has discouraged Marines from admitting they were injured or asking for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore and more people seek help today than they ever did before, so I think the culture is beginning to shift a little bit,\u201d Black said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The acceptance of a human performance mindset may accelerate that cultural change as leaders fully understand that a \u201cmore fit force is a better force,\u201d Black added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning how to ask for and provide assistance goes beyond simply physical training Black said and hits on perhaps the most important part of the human performance spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While physical health and fitness is one of the main goals, Black said that for Marines, physical fitness would come naturally if they were mentally and spiritually fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPhysical fitness is probably the end result of all other elements of fitness,\u201d Black said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur best athletic teams and organizations don\u2019t start with going to the gym, you have to go through a whole bunch of other things before you get to go workout in the weight room,\u201d Black said referring to his talks with college athletic departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black said there is a growing need for mental health in the nation that is reflective in the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/covid19\/pulse\/mental-health.htm\" target=\"_blank\">45.2% and 50.2<\/a>% of U.S. citizens between the ages of 18 and 29 had symptoms of anxiety or depression in 2021, a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between long hours, required moves that put stress on the family and deployments, those issues can be amplified in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The human performance mindset the Marine Corps hopes to adopt will look to target those issues even more than it targets the physical side of human performance, Black said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a Corps historically has had the youngest service members in the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Corps is still in the experimental phase, the new force fitness mindset seems to be bearing fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the increased physical demands, the first iteration of the East Coast course did not see an increased number of injuries, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/408566\/marine-corps-top-enlisted-leader-presents-human-performance-tactical-athlete-summit\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps press release. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the West Coast side, only two Marines dropped out of the first iteration of the Infantry Marine Course despite the increased physical training and requirements, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/06\/05\/marines-out-of-new-infantry-school-are-more-competent-but-more-tests-await\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Times previously reported. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sergeant major added that there is no specific timeline for the implementation of the
