Kevin Haunschild, stationed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/19\/marine-wounded-in-afghanistan-during-first-days-of-airport-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Air Station New River in North Carolina<\/a>, served as the Marine air traffic control mobile team leader with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 162, part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, according to a unit news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe selflessly ventured onto the active runway to clear an obstruction while surrounded by an unknown disposition of enemy forces and approximately 10,000 civilians,\u201d the release stated. \u201cHis courageous actions to rescue a stranded Afghan air traffic controller and retrieve mission-essential radio equipment while taking hostile small-arms fire allowed evacuation operations to resume safely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haunschild also \u201censured the rapid tempo for the conduct of the evacuation,\u201d helping evacuate 144,000 noncombatants, as well as troops from more than 23 nations, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/08\/23\/1-year-later-after-the-abbey-gate-attack\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/18-afghan-evac-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines look back 1 year after the Abbey Gate attack<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Even at the 20-year war\u2019s bitter end, Marines shepherded Afghans to safety, even at the cost of losing their own.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 13 Marines have received Bronze Stars for their actions during the evacuations, with two Marines, Maj. Benjamin Sutphen and Cpl. Wyatt Wilson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/07\/22\/marines-actions-during-afghanistan-exit-bring-bronze-star-with-combat-v\/\" target=\"_blank\">earning them with the \u201cV\u201d for valor device<\/a>, according to Manpower and Reserve Affairs spokesman Maj. Jordan Cochran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least two Marines from Haunschild\u2019s air traffic control team \u2014 Capt. Zackary Dahl and Gunnery Sgt.
