{"id":31468,"date":"2022-08-26T20:50:17","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T20:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/26\/former-marine-officials-experts-praise-force-design-2030\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:57:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:57:44","slug":"former-marine-officials-experts-praise-force-design-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/08\/26\/former-marine-officials-experts-praise-force-design-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Marine officials, experts praise Force Design 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future makeup of the Marine Corps was at the center of discussion during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ES_TICX0wt4\">online event<\/a> hosted by the Brookings Institution Friday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A panel of experts and former troops examined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/05\/06\/marine-3-star-technology-remade-combined-arms-the-corps-must-adjust\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps\u2019 Force Design 2030 initiative<\/a>, the service\u2019s plan to downsize and restructure its force. Among them was retired Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/author\/amy-mcgrath\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lt. Col. Amy McGrath,<\/a> the first woman in the Marine Corps to fly a combat mission in an F\/A-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy feeling again is these changes are big, but the Marine Corps is pretty good at adapting when the nation needs us to adapt,\u201d McGrath said, adding that this philosophical pivot was not simply a \u201cknee jerk reaction. &#8230; This is really important to be able to go up against a near-peer competitor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent annual report of Force Design 2030 was released in May, highlighting, among other things, changes to how the service will organize troops while divesting from certain assets, such as artillery. The plan emphasizes a focus on naval expeditionary warfare and working in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2022\/08\/01\/white-house-aims-to-release-overdue-security-strategies-within-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Defense Strategy.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I liked about this force design is that there is almost, finally, an acknowledgement that the Marine Corps can\u2019t do it all and that we have to prioritize,\u201d McGrath said of the fiscal constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others on the panel also supported the service\u2019s directional shift toward this future mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have some reservations, but I generally support the vision and I like a lot of what\u2019s in it,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/experts\/michael-e-ohanlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael O\u2019Hanlon<\/a>, a senior fellow and director of research in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O\u2019Hanlon added that while he was apprehensive about giving up tanks and other \u201cmaneuver warfare capabilities,\u201d the present plan serves as the best way to deter threats from China and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, there remain detractors who argue the shift is neither good for the branch nor the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Lt. Gen.
