Mason Englehart, a 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three crew members from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing\u2019s Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 were aboard the aircraft during a routine training operation at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 when the mishap occurred, Englehart told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Englehart told Marine Corps Times that 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is investigating the mishap, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coffeeordie.com\/mv-22b-osprey-fire\">Coffee or Die Magazine<\/a> first reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have not determined the total cost of this mishap,\u201d Englehart wrote in a statement to Marine Corps Times. \u201cBecause this mishap is currently under investigation we cannot provide additional information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/07\/20\/video-of-fatal-2017-marine-osprey-crash-shows-final-moments-before-landing-went-horribly-wrong\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"140\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Osprey-Crash.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Video of fatal 2017 Marine Osprey crash shows final moments before landing went horribly wrong<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A follow-on investigation showed technical issues, not pilot error, as the cause of the crash.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident caused \u201csignificant burn damage\u201d and was designated as a Class A mishap, meaning it involved at least $2.5 million in damage, according to Naval Safety Command. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engine had caught on fire during short final \u2014 the last leg of the flight, in which an aircraft is at a very low altitude and nearing the runway \u2014 according to Naval Safety Command. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Osprey takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter but can fly forward like an airplane by tilting its rotors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since its first prototype flights in 1989, the Osprey aircraft has been involved in several high-profile mishaps, leading to 51 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June, a 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Osprey<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2022\/06\/09\/official-4-dead-1-unaccounted-for-in-marine-osprey-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\"> crashed in southern California, killing five Marines. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Osprey crash in Norway in March <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/03\/20\/4-us-marines-killed-in-osprey-accident-in-norway-identified\/\">killed four Marines<\/a>, in an accident that investigators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2022\/08\/14\/pilot-error-the-cause-of-norway-osprey-crash-that-killed-4-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\">later attributed<\/a> to pilot error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the high-profile tragedies involving the aircraft, statistics provided by the Corps to Marine Corps Times in July show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/07\/20\/video-of-fatal-2017-marine-osprey-crash-shows-final-moments-before-landing-went-horribly-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Osprey actually has a lower mishap rate<\/a> in the past decade than several other Marine aircraft, including the F-35B fighter jet and the F\/A-18 Super Hornet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of July, the 10-year average mishap rate for the MV-22B Osprey was 3.16 per 100,000 flight hours, Marine spokesperson Maj. Jay Hernandez told Marine Corps Times at the time. That\u2019s barely higher than the total Marine aircraft mishap rate of 3.1 per 100,000 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, Air Force Special Operations Command <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/08\/18\/us-marine-corps-isnt-grounding-osprey-fleet-over-clutch-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\">grounded its fleet of 52 CV-22 Ospreys<\/a> over a clutch problem, while the Marine Corps did not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has known about the issue with hard clutch engagement since 2010, and has trained its pilots how to respond when such emergencies happen, Marine Corps spokesman Maj.
