After wrapping up his seven-year career in Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance in 2005, Reyes went on to found ocean restoration nonprofit Force Blue and has worked on a number of film and television projects, including as a trainer on the UK-based show \u201cSAS: Who Dares Wins.\u201d \u201cWorld\u2019s Toughest Test\u201d is the American version of that show, and, in Reyes\u2019 view, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2022\/12\/19\/tyler-perry-to-direct-film-about-wwiis-only-all-black-all-women-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\">more than just entertainment.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[It\u2019s] a human revelation show disguised as military selection,\u201d Reyes told Marine Corps Times in a December interview. \u201cThese are real, regular Americans, human beings, and we break them down to nothing, to less than nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2022\/12\/19\/tyler-perry-to-direct-film-about-wwiis-only-all-black-all-women-unit\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5FourUnitMembersWithJeepfromDefense_Sm.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Tyler Perry to direct film on WWII\u2019s only all-Black, all-female unit<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 6888th Battalion was the first all-Black, all female unit in the U.S. military.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in the blistering Jordan desert, the premise is simple: the celebrity \u201crecruits\u201d must outlast their fellow competitors in a series of challenges designed to push them to their breaking point. They can tap out anytime by surrendering a provided armband to a staff member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s always very frightening in the first few days because the recruits are dropping like flies,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cBut \u2026 of course it all works out. (FOX)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>The following conversation has been edited for space and clarity.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Marine Corps Times: <\/b>How do you overcome the trappings of reality TV \u2015 the cameras, the microphones, the crew \u2015 to create an environment that feels like realistic military training for the show?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Rudy Reyes: <\/b>All the cameras are hidden. And when you\u2019re putting these recruits in such pain, and the environment and the desert itself has degraded them, the last thing they\u2019re thinking about is who is watching. Our cameramen are very fit, some of them former forces like ourselves, and they wear the same cammies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And since these civilians have never carried rocks, and never had to fight hand-to-hand or shoot weapons or whatever, there\u2019s so much in your own head. The last thing they recognize is that one of these cats that\u2019s running in the formation has a camera on their shoulder, because they\u2019re dressed the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll see these muldoons break down and cry. And at any time, they\u2019re ready to freaking quit, because they can. Remember, I come from a world of real freaking war and hardcore stuff. You think I would put my name on anything that is not at my level?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Marine Corps Times: <\/b>What are some of the toughest scenarios the contestants are going to encounter this season?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Rudy Reyes: <\/b>Even the athletes are not used to combat, fighting each other and aggressively destroying each other. We will put men against women \u2013 you do not know who your enemy will be in combat, so you don\u2019t get to choose by weight and height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We choose who\u2019s going to fight, put on the gloves, headgear, mouthpiece and you go. And we don\u2019t call it until someone has been completely defeated, someone\u2019s on the ground getting their head smashed. In the invasion of Iraq I did not sleep for about three weeks straight; you never know when the fight is up. We put them in [a vehicle like] the helo-dunker we do in the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, they have no they haven\u2019t done this stuff before. The panic ensues; it\u2019s pandemonium in the ring. We gas them as well \u2015 the gas chamber, holy moley. It is amazing: SERE, gas chamber, hand-to-hand, we also do something called the red man where I am the red man, and they have to fight to get through me. So I fight one recruit after another. And I bring everything I can to bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Marine Corps Times: <\/b>You\u2019ve got four trainers on the show with a mix of special operations backgrounds: British Special Air Service, Navy SEAL. How were you able to put your unique Marine recon spin on things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Rudy Reyes: <\/b>Reconnaissance, I think we have a more personal way to engage. The pain, you take it personal. If you can\u2019t sleep for three days, but you have to get to this bridge and set it up with explosives, which I did, you take it personal. There is no excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recon, we also love and care about each other very, very much. I\u2019m still close to all my men; I think there\u2019s a certain personal touch that I bring as a recon Marine. It\u2019s what I do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Marine Corps Times: <\/b>What surprised you most about the contestants this season and where they succeeded and struggled?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Rudy Reyes: <\/b>I came in from a time of extreme combat operational tempo, and there were very few women in our battlespace. I didn\u2019t think that women had the bones and the muscles, maybe I didn\u2019t think they had the savage aggression for that environment. But I have been so impressed that I\u2019ve had to change my perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of our tasks are extremely physical, and [the women] are normally in the back. They\u2019re getting crushed on the daily. But they do not give up. I\u2019ve just been very impressed with the grit, the toughness and the intelligence of my female recruits. So I\u2019ll be the first to say I believe there is a place for them in the special operations community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Marine Corps Times: <\/b>How long does it take for the recruits to reach a turning point where they start to be less phased by the chaos of training and begin performing better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Rudy Reyes: <\/b>It\u2019s so condensed and intense. We lose a lot of recruits very quickly, I\u2019ll just say that. And those that stay are galvanized by Day 4 or 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Marine Corps Times: <\/b>Why is it important that an American audience gets to see this show?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Rudy Reyes: <\/b>I think it is about time that our country comes together and recognizes the men and women who lay it all on the line. It wasn\u2019t just in Iraq and Afghanistan; it\u2019s happening always. I think the cost is very important to know \u2015 our country needs to come together and value the men and women who have gone before and given us this incredible prosperity. That means the world to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>\u201cSpecial Forces: World\u2019s Toughest Test\u201d premieres Jan. 4 on
