Dan Kim said in a statement to Marine Corps Times on May 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hatch became unfastened during \u201croutine basic fighter maneuver training,\u201d according to Kim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intake \u2014 the part of the aircraft through which air is drawn \u2014 ingested some unlatched parts, according to Kim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilot returned to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, and exited the jet, stated Kim, who added that no injuries were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/navalsafetycommand.navy.mil\/Portals\/29\/Documents\/Mishap_Stats060723.pdf\">Naval Safety Command<\/a> labeled the incident a Class A mishap, meaning that property damage amounted to at least $2.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2023\/05\/30\/auditors-over-1-million-f-35-spare-parts-lost-by-dod-and-lockheed\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div officials believe the true amount of lost spare parts may be even higher.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is investigating the incident, according to Kim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russell Goemaere, a spokesman for the F-35 Joint Program Office, in a statement Thursday that he couldn\u2019t comment on the cause of the incident while the investigation was ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInitial findings have not discovered any safety of flight issues that would impact the fleet,\u201d Goemaere said. \u201cThe safety of our warfighters is our primary concern.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35B is the F-35 variant that can perform short takeoffs and vertical landings, meaning it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/video\/840291\/f-35b-lightning-iis-operate-amphibious-assault-ship-uss-tripoli-lha-7\">able to operate from amphibious assault ships<\/a> of the kind the Marine Corps uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is gradually replacing some of its older fixed-wing aircraft, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/16\/historic-marine-harrier-squadron-sunsets-as-the-corps-looks-to-the-f-35\/\">including the AV-8B Harrier<\/a> and <a
