Joseph Whaley<\/a>, 20, was \u201cfatally injured due to negligent discharge during live-fire small arms training exercise\u201d on Aug. 17 at Camp Pendleton, California, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/navalsafetycommand.navy.mil\/Portals\/29\/Documents\/Mishap_Stats092023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> Naval Safety Command\u2019s report <\/a>on recent deadly or costly mishaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whaley was an infantry student in approximately his fourth week of the 13-week Basic Reconnaissance Course at School of Infantry-West, located at the California base, the Marine Corps previously said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps said in August it was investigating the circumstances of the death. Military.com first reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2023\/09\/19\/marine-died-negligent-discharge-during-live-fire-training-camp-pendleton-navy-report-indicates.html\" target=\"_blank\">the new detail in the safety report <\/a>about the negligent discharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v18.0\" nonce=\"Tq6bV3gQ\"><\/script><div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/maurycountyscanner\/posts\/310210761529374?ref=embed_post\" data-width=\"552\"><blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/graph.facebook.com\/100076213570283\/posts\/310210761529374\/\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\"><p>Not every day do we do posts like this on our community page, however, we have just learned that Joseph Whaley, from our&#8230;<\/p>Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/maurycountyscanner\">Maury County Comm.<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/graph.facebook.com\/100076213570283\/posts\/310210761529374\/\">Friday, August 18, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No other Marines died in 2023 from accidental gun discharges during training, according to the Naval Safety Command report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/10\/12\/marine-killed-in-california-dry-fire-training-exercise\/\">Lance Cpl. Jonothan Barnette<\/a>, 24, was killed at the combat training base in Twentynine Palms, California, after getting struck in the chest by a bullet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps data on the prevalence of deaths resulting from live-fire training wasn\u2019t readily available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, car accidents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/12\/09\/this-was-the-top-cause-of-marine-deaths-in-2022\/\">were the leading cause<\/a> of accidental deaths in the Corps, Marine Corps Times previously reported. Suicide was the top cause of death overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whaley\u2019s death was the first in a series of fatal mishaps occurring within weeks of each other. Following two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/08\/28\/3-marines-who-died-in-osprey-crash-in-australia-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\">aircraft<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/08\/26\/marine-major-identified-as-pilot-who-died-in-california-fa-18-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\">crashes<\/a> that killed a total of four Marines, the top Marine leader, Gen. Eric Smith, ordered every Marine unit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/08\/31\/top-marine-orders-culture-of-safety-review-after-deadly-crashes\/\">to review its safety practices<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whaley, a native of Maury County, Tennessee, graduated in 2022 from Columbia Central High School, where he served in the ROTC program, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tnfunerals.com\/obituary\/lcpl-joseph-whaley\">his obituary<\/a>.
