{"id":31967,"date":"2023-09-06T20:56:39","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T20:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/09\/06\/marines-will-get-more-chances-to-earn-expert-shooting-badge\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:51:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:51:02","slug":"marines-will-get-more-chances-to-earn-expert-shooting-badge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/06\/marines-will-get-more-chances-to-earn-expert-shooting-badge\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines will get more chances to earn expert shooting badge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/23\/the-new-marine-corps-rifle-qualification-is-here\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new range qualification program <\/a>that has caused the proportion of troops earning the highest-level shooting badge to drop by more than half, the Marine Corps is changing policy to offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/07\/27\/marines-finally-getting-a-realistic-force-on-force-shooter-for-combat-training\/\" target=\"_blank\">those who miss the mark another shot.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Oct. 1, Marines who earn the lesser marksman and sharpshooter badges during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/12\/09\/drastic-changes-to-marine-corps-rifle-qualification-coming-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">rifle or pistol range qualification<\/a> will get two more chances during the same fiscal year to hit the range again and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/04\/changes-to-the-annual-rifle-qualification-may-be-coming-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">bring their score up to expert,<\/a> according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Messages\/Messages-Display\/Article\/3517306\/marksmanship-program-update\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine administrative message published Wednesday.<\/a> If Marines previously failed at the range, earning an unqualified classification, or UNQ, they\u2019ll get those score improvement chances on top of the opportunity to return to the range to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal for change emerged during the October 2022 Combat Marksmanship Symposium, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Joshua Grayek, director of marksmanship instruction at Weapons and Training Battalion out of Quantico, Virginia, told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps\u2019 top shooting professionals expressed concerns, Grayek said, that the annual rifle qualification program introduced in October 2021 made it substantially harder to earn a prized expert badge and thus warranted some adjustment. The annual rifle qualification, which replaced a legacy 1990s-era range qualification program, emphasizes more realistic combat scenarios and requires Marines to wear combat gear, shoot in sequence and hit more specific \u201clethality zones\u201d on a humanoid target.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/07\/27\/marines-finally-getting-a-realistic-force-on-force-shooter-for-combat-training\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-force-on-force-training.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines finally getting a realistic force-on-force shooter for combat training<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps plans to buy and field 16 battalion-sized systems, starting in 2023.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe legacy system \u2026 didn\u2019t stress the shooter out,\u201d Grayek said. \u201cYou had plenty of time to fire your rounds, and you were doing it from very, very stable shooting positions \u2026 that was good to learn basics, but it didn\u2019t translate too well into combat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the added difficulty of the new requirements, leaders predicted the number of expert-qualified Marines would drop precipitously, Grayek said, possibly dipping as low as 8%. In fact, he said, data gathered since the symposium paints a better picture: Expert rates under the annual rifle qualification program are between 25% and 30%. Still, he said, that\u2019s down from 65% to 70% of Marines under the previous program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne could maybe argue that [Expert rates were] inflated,\u201d Grayek acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, he said, there\u2019s pure value in giving Marines more time at the range to improve their lethality under more realistic conditions \u2015 and it also addresses the inevitable angst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will improve morale, because (Marines) know that, if I\u2019ve messed up or didn\u2019t shoot to my true potential, I can go back and shoot better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=3687b8b5-ff7f-4161-83c0-b48a360c8896\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-3687b8b5-ff7f-4161-83c0-b48a360c8896.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Major changes to Marine rifle qualifications arrive | Military Times Reports<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per the Marine message, Marines are authorized to wear the most recent badge they\u2019ve earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Marine who received a marksman score on his or her first qualification attempt, but returned to the range and shot expert, would thus be able to wear the expert badge for the remainder of the qualification period. A Marine who earns the expert badge on a first attempt isn\u2019t eligible to return to the range, the message states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of note, Grayek said, the unqualified classification rate has decreased substantially under the new shooting program, from up to 7.5% to just .7% in 2022. While unqualified Marines now have the chance to return to re-qualify and then to improve, this doesn\u2019t preclude commanders from taking administrative action against them from failing in the first place, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The policy change is not expected to cost the Marine Corps more money, Grayek said, because the annual rifle qualification program is significantly cheaper than the legacy program: It uses two targets rather than four, and takes place over three days of shooting rather than two weeks. To ensure that Marines who desire to improve their score get that chance, he said, commanders will need to keep track of upcoming range opportunities and transfer allocations, or available spots for Marines, between units, if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat way, the commander is not wasting allocations, and everyone\u2019s afforded the opportunity to go back and qualify,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grayek vehemently denied that the policy change to allow second and third chances at the range amounted to a lowering of standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf someone\u2019s saying that, they\u2019re completely off base,\u201d he said. \u201cYes, we may not have as many Marines wearing expert badges as we did in the past. However, I would take an ARQ sharpshooter against a legacy expert any day of the week.
