{"id":31971,"date":"2019-05-02T22:38:02","date_gmt":"2019-05-02T22:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/02\/crackdown-at-lejeune-inside-the-2nd-marine-division-commanders-controversial-call-for-discipline\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:53:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:53:50","slug":"crackdown-at-lejeune-inside-the-2nd-marine-division-commanders-controversial-call-for-discipline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/05\/02\/crackdown-at-lejeune-inside-the-2nd-marine-division-commanders-controversial-call-for-discipline\/","title":{"rendered":"Crackdown at Lejeune: Inside the 2nd Marine Division commander\u2019s controversial call for discipline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. \u2014 When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/04\/18\/lejeunes-2nd-marine-division-mandates-daily-routine-citing-poor-discipline-and-long-hair\/\" target=\"_blank\">commanding general of the 2nd Marine Division <\/a>sent out a letter to his Marines citing the \u201csignificant decline in the basic discipline of our warriors,\u201d opinions flew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, of course, rumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some rumors circulating the barracks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/17\/marine-bases-ravaged-by-hurricane-florence-see-huge-increases-in-housing-allowances\/\" target=\"_blank\">Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, <\/a>are partially true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did happen in a Camp Lejeune chow hall a few weeks ago that the commandant of the Marine Corps ran into a division <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/18\/the-corps-new-tropical-uniforms-will-be-available-in-june\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine who was \u201cin pajamas.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it wasn\u2019t that one unfortunate instance that caused the commanding general of 2nd Marine Division to put in motion plans to refocus the division, as insisted on by the excitable rumor. There are \u201ca hundred different\u201d examples he could share, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/18\/norway-deployments-frozen-after-camp-lejeune-cleans-up-from-hurricane-florence\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maj. Gen. David Furness <\/a>told Marine Corps Times in an exclusive interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for Furness, who had been traveling at the time of the chow hall blunder, receiving a letter from the commandant\u2019s office about the incident didn\u2019t help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither did the time the major general, who started his career as a rifle platoon commander and 81 mm mortar platoon commander in the 2nd Marine Division, approached his two-star parking space with two lance corporals sitting on a bench in front of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general walked by them, he recounted. And when the junior Marines didn\u2019t acknowledge him, he greeted them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Marine totally blew him off \u2014 didn\u2019t get up or acknowledge him, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe other one looks up, and, while sitting, salutes with an iPhone in his ear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general asked them: Were you ever taught to do that in boot camp?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo sir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy did you try to do it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy are you on the phone here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spot correcting was his first tactic when he took over the division in August, Furness says. But it hasn\u2019t been effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the correction shouldn\u2019t be coming just from him, but from all his Marine leaders. Which is not something he says he has always been seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 16, Furness fired off a policy letter to the entire 2nd Marine Division detailing a new \u201cbasic daily routine\u201d for North Carolina division Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have allowed Marines and Sailors to walk around with long hair, nonexistent or poor shaves, unserviceable boots and utilities and improper civilian attire,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThere are weeds growing around our building and work spaces and trash everywhere but the dumpsters where it belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA general lack of attention to detail and corrective action by peers and leaders results in lower discipline and destroys the foundation on which the Marine Corps was built \u2014 ironclad discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter, and its accompanying \u201cbasic daily routine\u201d hourly schedule, went viral among Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cold Corps\u201d came forward, asking what \u00adhappened to their beloved Marine Corps and lamenting that \u201cironclad discipline\u201d they remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many other Marines responded the opposite way, sending accusations of micromanagement at the highest levels: angrily alleging that this is an antithesis to the Marine Corps motto of \u201ccentralized command, decentralized control,\u201d and asking why should killers really care about haircuts?<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/04\/18\/lejeunes-2nd-marine-division-mandates-daily-routine-citing-poor-discipline-and-long-hair\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Picture1.jpg_138e09.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lejeune\u2019s 2nd Marine Division mandates \u2018daily routine,\u2019 citing poor discipline and long hair<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The daily routine, which starts with morning reveille at 5:30 a.m. and ends with 4:45 p.m. liberty, also includes a breakdown of times for hygiene, fitness, chow and daily unit tasks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fingers came back to point at Furness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one retired gunner said on Facebook: It was a \u201cvitriolic social media dog-pile.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furness says he regrets how the initial rollout went. The Luddite commanding general who doesn\u2019t use social media sheepishly said he didn\u2019t realize the letter would get out of the unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wouldn\u2019t do it like that again, he says, but he\u2019s not backing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From June 3 through June 7 there will be an entire division stand down. It\u2019s more of an educational stand down, he says, to teach Marines what the right way looks like and show how to best and most effectively enforce Marine Corps standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, to teach what they already learned in boot camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not coming from just him. In September 2018 he formed a \u201csergeants council\u201d of about 12 Marines pulled from across the division to bring to the table issues they see on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now the council, which meets monthly, is focusing on planning the June stand down. Robertson\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will tell you I went to a chow hall today and from the car to the door I picked up a straw, five cigarette butts, a top of some drink beverage and some indescribable piece of trash,\u201d Furness told Marine Corps Times April 26, comparing the distance to the short hallway leaving his Camp Lejeune office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow, in the Marine Corps I grew up with people would be asking why is a CG picking up trash?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I\u2019m part of the team, No. 1 \u2014 I want to set the example.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he also wants Marines to \u201chave pride\u201d in their surroundings. And pay attention to detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s about more than just haircuts, Furness says. He believes lack of discipline in garrison will carry over to training and eventually combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s already being seen in training, he says. The after-action reviews he has been receiving from California service-level exercises at Twentynine Palms, California, and the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, California, are uniformly marking Marine performance as \u201cwoefully inadequate,\u201d Furness said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it is still pretty unique for a commanding general to take such hold from up high. And, it begs the question: What is going on in 2nd Marine Division?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commanding general didn\u2019t say exactly what happened to the pajamaed Marine in the chow hall: But he knows that Marine got a call from the sergeant major of the Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furness\u2019 big regret is that he didn\u2019t get a letter and contingency plan out sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m upset with myself for not doing this quicker, giving more specific guidance to my junior leaders and my leaders sooner so that they could have gone after this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut, again, this is a Marine Corps problem, not just a 2nd Marine Division problem, but we\u2019re the \u2018follow me\u2019 division, and I\u2019m stepping out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Boot bands don\u2019t make killers <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issues in 2nd Marine Division right now are not unique to East Coast Marines, Furness says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He insists that he and his peers have been lamenting about a lack of discipline crawling across the Corps for the past 10\u201315 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it is at the small unit leader level that he\u2019s looking to the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI absolutely believe it\u2019s incumbent on the leadership of those units to make them adhere to the Marine Corps standards, because part of the pride of being a Marine is being better than everybody else,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not asking anyone to do anything that\u2019s not Marine Corps order \u2026 or part of the Marine Corps culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several responses to the letter have been angry, calling Furness\u2019 tactic an out-of-line takeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent anonymous opinion article reportedly from an active-duty Marine in combat arms on the military website Task &amp; Purpose was titled, \u201cThe \u2018micromanaging\u2019 Marine general should focus on strategy, not mustaches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That junior Marine officer started the letter by telling Furness, \u201cYour latest policy letter \u2026 violates the core tenants of Marine Corps doctrine. You ought to repeal it immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proper shaves and poorly maintained facilities are noteworthy, \u201cbut these things are not essential,\u201d the Marine wrote. \u201cYou can kill enemies with long hair. You can win battles without boot bands or rolled sleeves. At the end of the day, grooming standards have only tangential relevance to victory in war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis petty stuff higher ups worry about is the \u00adreason why good, effective Marines get out,\u201d a five-year enlisted Marine who got out of the Corps in the past year told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an initial read, Furness\u2019 letter does look like a mandated schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI expect EACH AND EVERY Marine and Sailor to fully embrace the following routine,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the general backtracked on that wording of his letter, telling Marine Corps Times there is no micromanaged schedule, it\u2019s a traditional schedule for small unit leaders to base their unit schedules off of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat plan is not a division-wide schedule,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a schedule. So if they want to adopt it, you know, verbatim, that\u2019s their decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a mandated, by the hour schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, said they thought the division\u2019s response to the letter seems to be pretty split, maybe even 50\/50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A couple Marines mentioned there is now more traffic getting on base in the early morning hours. Earlier start times and mandatory physical training each morning the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other 2nd Division Marines say \u201cliterally nothing\u201d has changed in their units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to 1st Lt. Nathaniel Thompson, with Charlie \u00adCompany, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, there had been notice of some units coming in late or \u00adleaving early, or taking long lunches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, for a well-disciplined unit, there hasn\u2019t been much change, especially on the side of a daily schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe good units are already doing this, and they will continue to do this,\u201d Thompson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why the fierce push-back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Max Uriarte, the creator of Terminal Lance, was the first to post Furness\u2019 letter publicly, on his outlet\u2019s Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the fundamental problem that junior Marines have with things like this is that 99 percent of them are doing the right thing, but are being punished because of the 1 percent that are not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Punishing an entire division is odd, Uriarte said, noting that he personally never had seen that before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHad it not blown up on social media, it probably would have just been a few weeks of butt-hurt SNCOs passing down punishment and would have faded off eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMass punishment events like this spring up all the time, and serve as a regular reminder to look forward to your DD-214,\u201d Uriarte said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Robert Neller did not respond to requests to comment on the chow hall incident, Furness did hear from him after his letter went out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neller had been Furness\u2019 division commander in combat: The commandant was calling to ask if the division commander was alright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe said he supported what I was doing and just wanted to make sure I was doing OK. He was just checking on one of his Marines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which is what Furness insists he is doing here: \u00adleading from the front and coaching a team of \u00adMarines to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Furness was a child, he wanted to be an \u00adoutside linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt just didn\u2019t work out that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the father of four compares leadership a lot to coaching a sports team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consequences in the Marine Corps are a lot greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hate it when I hear analogies of the NFL or something, \u2018It\u2019s like war out there,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cNo, it\u2019s not. Nobody out there is going to get their head blown off this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, like being a part of the New England Patriots, he said, or any other professional football team, there is a culture. And there are parts of that culture that help lead to being champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is no different, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you do that and you give of yourself and you embrace that culture and become a full member of it, there\u2019s a certain pride associated with that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd then the biggest championship you can win is going to combat, accomplishing the mission and bringing everybody home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Andrea Scott is editor of Marine Corps Times.
