Eric Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/30\/top-marine-general-hospitalized-leaving-3-star-as-acting-leader\/\">was hospitalized Sunday evening<\/a> following what the Marine Corps called a \u201cmedical emergency.\u201d With the commandant in the hospital and no Senate-confirmed assistant commandant, the senior Marine leader at Marine Corps headquarters, Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl, started performing the duties of commandant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times and the U.S. Naval Institute reported that Smith had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/30\/us\/politics\/marine-commandant-hospitalized.html\">experienced a heart attack<\/a>, with the Times saying it occurred while Smith was running near his residence at Marine Barracks Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noah Gray, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said in a statement Tuesday that emergency service personnel \u201cresponded to a cardiac arrest\u201d near an intersection a block away from Smith\u2019s residence at Marine Barracks Washington on Sunday at 4:58 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a sudden cardiac arrest, which can occur after a heart attack, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/heart-attack\/about-heart-attacks\/heart-attack-or-sudden-cardiac-arrest-how-are-they-different\">the heart stops beating<\/a>, according to the American Heart Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gray said the department doesn\u2019t name its patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBystanders called 911 and began CPR after witnessing an adult male collapse on the sidewalk while running\u201d in the area of 7th Street and G Street Southeast, Gray said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps had remained tight-lipped about Smith\u2019s condition, citing his family\u2019s desire for privacy and medical privacy law. But the Corps\u2019 update Wednesday confirmed that Smith experienced his \u201cmedical condition\u201d near his home at Marine Barracks Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith \u201cis recovering in a leading hospital in our Nation\u2019s capital,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/Press-Releases\/Press-Release-Display\/Article\/3576560\/marine-corps-provides-update-on-gen-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Marine Corps\u2019 statement<\/a> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors have been limited to Smith\u2019s family at the family\u2019s request, according to the statement, which added, \u201cUpdates to his condition will be provided as appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith\u2019s hospitalization and the ensuing leadership gap in the Marine Corps spurred the Senate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/11\/01\/senate-to-vote-on-top-air-force-navy-usmc-leaders-in-coming-days\/\">prepare to vote individually<\/a> on assistant commandant nominee Lt. Gen. Christopher Mahoney and other top military leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, had put a monthslong hold on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3573660\/pentagon-official-underscores-impact-of-senate-hold-on-dod-nominees\/\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 380 senior military promotions<\/a>, including Mahoney\u2019s, in protest of a Pentagon policy providing paid leave and travel expenses for troops who seek abortions out of state, a policy he views as illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without a designated assistant, Smith said Friday, he had been working the equivalent of two jobs. He previously said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/18\/as-both-the-no-1-and-no-2-marine-his-schedule-is-not-sustainable\/\">this punishing schedule<\/a> was \u201cnot sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?req=granuleid:USC-prelim-title10-section8044&#038;num=0&#038;edition=prelim\">By law<\/a>, Senate confirmation would allow Mahoney to perform the duties of commandant while Smith recovers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marine Commandant Gen.
