David Berger gave Marine Corps Systems Command a task: revamp Marines\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highergov.com\/document\/ptu-industry-day-brief-pdf-728241\/\" target=\"_blank\">green-on-green physical training uniform.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/14\/marines-this-might-be-your-new-physical-training-uniform\/\">The initial prototype<\/a>, with basketball-style shorts, too-heavy fabric and a gender-neutral design, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/10\/06\/after-negative-feedback-marine-corps-tests-yet-another-pt-uniform\/\">left the Marines who tested it dissatisfied<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Systems Command tried again, unveiling in October 2022 a new prototype that retained the reflective elements and moisture-wicking technology of the first prototype but shortened the shorts, lightened the fabric and adjusted the fit by gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than a year later, the Marine Corps quietly scrapped the whole plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMarine Corps Systems Command has ceased work to procure and field the new PT uniform to redirect resources to more urgent defense needs,\u201d Morgan Blackstock, a spokeswoman for the command, said via email Tuesday in response to a Marine Corps Times inquiry on the status of the uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/03\/13\/corps-plans-to-spend-more-money-on-retaining-training-marines\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vr.jpg_67ad74.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Corps plans to spend more money on retaining, training Marines<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The proposed budget for fiscal year 2024 allocates $77 million for reenlistment bonuses.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to a Marine Corps Times question about what the other \u201curgent defense needs\u201d were, Blackstock wrote on Monday, \u201cThe Marine Corps is prioritizing programs that better focus on taking care of Marines and USMC modernization,\u201d but did not elaborate further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is engaged in two expensive initiatives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/09\/08\/marines-aim-to-accelerate-force-design-modernization-if-budget-allows\/\" target=\"_blank\">Force Design 2030<\/a> and Talent Management 2030, geared toward modernizing war-fighting and making Marines want to stay in the service, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No funds had yet been allocated for the uniform in fiscal years 2023 and 2024, Blackstock said. The Corps rescinded the approval to develop a replacement uniform in September, according to the spokeswoman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current \u2014 and seemingly permanent \u2014 physical training uniform consists of a simple olive-green T-shirt and thigh-length shorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In cold weather, Marines can throw on warmer layers in the same olive-green shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silkies, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2014\/08\/18\/marines-call-on-cmc-to-bring-back-silkies-and-tattoos\/\" target=\"_blank\">extremely short physical training shorts<\/a> that used to be de rigueur for Marines, haven\u2019t been part of standard-issue physical training gear since 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/birthday-run.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/birthday-run.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/birthday-run.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/birthday-run.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/birthday-run.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Assistant Commandant Gen. The reflective elements were meant to replace the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/11\/marines-weaponize-the-ever-useful-reflective-glow-belt\/\">glow belts<\/a> Marines often wear while exercising in dark conditions or near roads, according to a November 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dla.mil\/Portals\/104\/Documents\/TroopSupport\/CloTex\/2022%20JAPBI\/06%20Marine%20Corps%20JF%20Augustine.pdf?ver=aAtZH0BEWB_H2hjT1b8-8w%3D%3D\">Systems Command slideshow<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of Marines tested both the initial and the revised prototypes, according to Marine Corps news releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2021, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Contracts\/Contract\/Article\/2571500\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps awarded a contract worth a maximum of more than $146 million<\/a> to four uniform manufacturers, which would have made a maximum total of 1.8 million of the new uniforms by April 2026. The Systems Command slideshow estimated it would cost $7.5 million to get the uniforms just for recruit depots and Officer Candidates School, the first locations that had been scheduled to receive the new garb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/08\/31\/marine-camouflage-uniform-shortage-wont-be-fixed-until-summer-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">grappling with shortages<\/a> of several uniform items, including the camouflage combat utility uniform. That uniform, designed for everyday wear, won\u2019t fully be back in stock until July 2024, Marine spokesman Maj. John Parry previously told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, unit leaders can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/29\/camouflage-uniform-shortage-prompts-marine-corps-to-soften-attire-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\">allow Marines to wear certain nonstandard uniform items<\/a>, including the desert-colored combat utility uniform, Commandant Gen. Eric Smith announced in September. But even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynavyexchange.com\/marpat-desert-blouse-with-permethrin-\/12840553\" target=\"_blank\">the desert-colored uniform<\/a> is out of stock online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The physical training uniform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynavyexchange.com\/usmc-pt-shorts-\/12839836\" target=\"_blank\">appears to be in stock<\/a>, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One online reviewer expressed tongue-in-cheek fondness for the shorts, writing on the Navy Exchange website, \u201cSometimes, I wear my shorts while dancing in the rain, or while prancing through piles of autumn leaves, giggling all the way.
