Amilcar Marroquinsalinas and Eric Kinglewis rushed to the sound, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/462034\/two-marine-recruiters-save-life\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/12\/29\/far-more-marines-died-in-car-crashes-than-other-accidents-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\">A mangled motorcycle<\/a> lay on the side of the road, debris littered the road from curb to curb and the driver of a car that had hit the motorcycle was shaken, possibly in shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The motorcyclist lay motionless on the road. Though a crowd of people had gathered, no one was helping. Some were even recording the scene on their phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kinglewis and Salinas didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI felt like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2024\/01\/02\/corporal-honored-for-saving-fellow-marines-life-after-a-hit-and-run\/\" target=\"_blank\">I knew what to do <\/a>and should be on the scene to help,\u201d Kinglewis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/12\/29\/far-more-marines-died-in-car-crashes-than-other-accidents-in-2023\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Collart-funeral.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Far more Marines died in car crashes in 2023 than in other accidents<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The summer was a particularly difficult time for the Marine Corps in terms of both on- and off-duty accidents.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marroquinsalinas told Kinglewis to grab the first aid kit from the recruiting office and call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he returned, the pair began assessing the injured motorcyclist\u2019s injuries. Marroquinsalinas found a severe laceration on the rider\u2019s leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He began to apply pressure to the wound and wrapped it with a clean bandage from the kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStaff Sgt. Kinglewis and Staff Sgt. Marroquinsalinas performed well under stress and helped provide the necessary first aid in order to save a life,\u201d said Sgt. Maj. Nathaniel Eirich, the Recruiting Station Chicago\u2019s sergeant major. \u201cAs Marines, we are trained to help people in need, no matter the time, place, or circumstance, and that is exactly what these Marines did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police officers who soon arrived on the scene applied another tourniquet to the leg injury. Paramedics then arrived, providing further support and transporting the rider to a medical facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLooking back on the situation, I was able to put my training to good use, keep my cool, and help a young man make it home,\u201d Kinglewis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is far from the first time a Marine recruiter has saved a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/600217\/marine-recruiter-in-idaho-saves-mans-life-after-suicide-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sgt. Cody Leifheit<\/a> was awakened in his Lewiston, Idaho, apartment to the sounds of screaming. At first, he thought it might just be the 2 a.m. bar crowd making noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when it didn\u2019t stop, he ran outside and down the street to find a 19-year-old man hanging from a rope attached to a tree branch 25 feet off the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends and family would later say that the man had talked about killing himself, but friends didn\u2019t believe he would do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leifheit clambered up the tree, reached Austin Tow, a friend of the man, who\u2019d climbed to try and help him, but stalled, worrying that by cutting him loose he might be seriously injured when he hit the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHey, I\u2019m a Marine and I\u2019m here to help your friend.\u201d Leifheit told Tow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sergeant held the tree with one arm and lifted the hanging man with the other, easing the pressure so Tow could cut the rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leifheit then used the tree as a kind of makeshift backboard, performing chest compressions on the unconscious man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man began breathing. But he would lose and regain his heartbeat twice more before first responders arrived. After two days in a medically induced coma, the man survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/2885799\/marine-corps-recruiters-heroic-actions\/#:~:text=%2D%2D-,Staff%20Sgt.,a%20three%20car%20pile%20up.\" target=\"_blank\">Staff Sgt. Joseph Maldonado<\/a>, a recruiter in Fullerton, California, was driving to work when he came upon a three-car pile up on the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He heard a man calling for help in a red Mercedes laid on its side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did what I did because it\u2019s what we do as Marines. I saw the accident and heard the man yelling and knew I could be of help,\u201d Maldonado said. &#8221; I saw where I could help and simply did something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maldonado got a knife from a bystander and crawled into the vehicle to cut the man\u2019s seat belt and help him get out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he was helping him the man began having a seizure. Maldonado had to pull him to the back of the vehicle so he could kick out the front windshield to make safe exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After clearing the man out of the Mercedes and carrying him with the help of bystanders away from the car, he returned to the vehicle and found the man\u2019s insulin and medication. Maldonado handed the medication to a police officer who arrived on the scene and continued treating the man\u2019s seizure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 10, 2020, Sgt. Nathan Miller, a recruiter in Pembroke, Virgina, was driving to the office in the morning and came upon a car bent in half following a crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He pulled up to the vehicle. At first the driver looked ok, but Miller rolled down his window to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy son\u2019s in the backseat of the car, call 911.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he listened, he saw a car seat.
