Gen. Roger Turner took over the strategically important III Marine Expeditionary Force from Lt. Gen. James Bierman in a ceremony Friday at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">III Marine Expeditionary Force, which is headquartered in Okinawa and has troops stationed throughout the Indo-Pacific, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2022\/05\/18\/pacific-marines-move-to-formalize-role-as-the-stand-in-force\/\">is a central focus<\/a> of the Corps\u2019 ambitious modernization initiative, aimed in large part at countering the Chinese military. One of the service\u2019s three main forces, it is composed of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/2673060\/us-7th-fleet-and-iii-mef-partnership-in-indo-pacific\/\">approximately 27,000 Marines<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will train tirelessly, build lasting partnerships, and remain ready to respond at a moment\u2019s notice,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/462471\/iii-mef-change-command-ceremony\">Turner said<\/a>, according to a Marine news release. \u201cIII MEF\u2019s presence here is the linchpin of regional stability and a testament to our enduring dedication to uphold the principles of freedom and justice, no matter the challenges that lie ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/3372070\/general-officer-announcements\/\">The White House in April 2023 nominated Turner<\/a> to pin on a third star and helm that force, but the nearly 10-month-long refusal by Sen.
