Dalton Beals, 19,<\/a> died while at boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/08\/04\/extreme-heat-led-to-marines-likely-avoidable-death-during-the-crucible\/\" target=\"_blank\">result of extreme body temperature.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An extensively redacted investigation shared with Marine Corps Times found his death \u201clikely avoidable,\u201d and found his drill instructor at fault for not monitoring Beals and his fellow recruits while they completed \u201cthe Crucible\u201d \u2014 the challenging finale to Marine Corps boot camp \u2014 during 90 plus degree temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcrdpi.marines.mil\/Leaders\/Article-View\/Article\/795035\/brig-gen-walker-m-field\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brig. Gen. Walker Field<\/a>, the commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, is considering whether or not to charge the unnamed drill instructor involved with Beals\u2019 death,<a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/marine-corps-drill-instructor-may-face-charges-recruit-death\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Task and Purpose first reported. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn Article 32 hearing has been conducted and a Preliminary Hearing Officer Report has been provided to the Commanding General of MCRD Parris Island\/Eastern Recruiting Region, which includes recommendations as to referral of court-martial charges,\u201d Maj. Philip Kulczewski, a spokesman for Parris Island, South Carolina, told Marine Corps Times via email on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Commanding General is considering the recommendations of that report at this time, and will make a decision as to referral of charges after consultation with legal counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/08\/04\/extreme-heat-led-to-marines-likely-avoidable-death-during-the-crucible\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ZFRFSY3GQNEIPEXDEI4NTSXHCU.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Extreme heat led to Marine\u2019s \u2018likely avoidable\u2019 death during \u2018the Crucible\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The investigation outlines how Pfc. Dalton Beals\u2019 unnamed drill instructor largely was at fault for intensifying training, and that even prior to the Crucible recruits were not comfortable bringing problems forward.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 4, 2021, Beals reportedly had separated from his group and was unaccounted for for roughly for one hour, the investigation had found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administrative action also was recommended against two commanders, according to the investigation, but the status of any proceedings for those individuals remains unclear at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beals was sadly one of two recruits to die at Parris Island, South Carolina in 2021. Pvt. Anthony Munoz, 21, died on his first day of training there after falling from a balcony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/marine_corps\/2021-10-05\/investigation-apparent-suicide-marine-recruit-anthony-munoz-3136114.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Island Packet previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another Marine recruit, Pfc. Javier Pong, died in September after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/10\/09\/marine-recruit-collapses-during-training-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\">collapsing during training<\/a> at Camp Pendleton in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news of possible charges comes nearly five years after another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/11\/10\/drill-instructor-gets-10-years-behind-bars-for-parris-island-hazing-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Parris Island, South Carolina, drill instructor received 10 years<\/a> after being found guilty of maltreatment of recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHeartbreakingly there\u2019s a lot of stories out there,\u201d Stacie Beals, the mother of Pfc. Dalton Beals, previously told Marine Corps Times. \u201cThings that shouldn\u2019t be happening.
