{"id":32638,"date":"2023-10-02T18:31:28","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T18:31:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/02\/marine-corps-deactivates-its-squadron-for-training-fa-18-pilots\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:59:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:59:49","slug":"marine-corps-deactivates-its-squadron-for-training-fa-18-pilots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/02\/marine-corps-deactivates-its-squadron-for-training-fa-18-pilots\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps deactivates its squadron for training F\/A-18 pilots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps deactivated its squadron dedicated to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/03\/04\/marine-corps-concludes-final-carrier-deployment-with-fa-18-hornet\/\" target=\"_blank\"> training pilots to fly the F\/A-18 Hornet<\/a>, in a step toward<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/06\/02\/cherry-point-receives-its-first-f-35-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\"> transitioning to the F-35 Lightning II.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 had its sundown ceremony Friday at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/07\/26\/marine-f-35cs-in-this-squadron-are-ready-for-combat-in-another-fighter-jet-first\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, <\/a>where it is based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps will still train aviators to fly the F\/A-18 jet, but that training will now occur in Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323, rather than in a solely training-focused squadron, according to a 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing news release Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where the SharpSHooters \u2014 as Marines from Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 are called \u2014 will be moved, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3rdmaw.marines.mil\/Units\/MAG-11\/VMFAT-101\/VMFAT-101-Deactivation\/\">the squadron\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a former commanding officer of the \u2018SharpSHooters,\u2019 I can attest to the squadron\u2019s direct impact on the Marine Corps\u2019 operational readiness today,\u201d Brig. Gen. Robert Brodie, assistant commander of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, said in the release. \u201cVMFAT-101 has shaped a critical element of naval aviation for a half-century, and the Marines and Sailors of the squadron remain pivotal in preserving that warfighting legacy and transitioning to the next generation of combat aviation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/05\/10\/heres-how-marine-air-power-will-shift-with-the-corps-2022-aviation-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here\u2019s how Marine air power will shift with the Corps\u2019 2022 aviation plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It&#039;s the Corps\u2019 first publicly released aviation plan since 2019.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps is slowly moving away from the older F\/A-18 Hornets and AV-8B Harriers in favor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/06\/30\/marine-f-35cs-fly-from-california-to-australia-in-1st-for-us-military\/\" target=\"_blank\">higher-tech F-35 Lightning II aircraft. <\/a>Marines will continue to fly the Hornet until 2030, according to the news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squadron was activated in 1969 to train McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II pilots, according to its website. In the late 1980s, it transitioned from the F-4 to the F\/A-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Friday\u2019s ceremony, the squadron marked its deactivation by \u201cflying the barn,\u201d launching 18 aircraft in one flight, according to a Saturday news release from 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. More than 300 service members, veterans, family members and local supporters gathered for the ceremony that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThousands of aircrew have passed through the halls of VMFAT-101 \u2014 fighter pilots, fighter radar intercept officers, fighter weapon systems officers, and it\u2019s bigger than that,\u201d Brodie said, as quoted in the release. \u201cThis squadron has trained more maintenance Marines than any other in the Marine Corps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Sgt. Maj. Dennis Downing, who was senior enlisted leader of the SharpSHooters from July 2014 to February 2016, told Marine Corps Times the squadron was distinctive in that it had students and maintainers from both the Marine Corps and the Navy at the time.
